    9mm NATO vs no

What is the background on 9mm NATO ammo. I impulse bought 8 boxes for $15.17, 50 rounds made a call to a friend he said yes it good. I asked is it like a +P ammo, said a little.

I have the new M&P shield, 9c, 9PC ported, Sig 226, P938 and maybe a P320 carry will it be good for duty and just another target ammo??

never seen in 9mm mainly its been rifle ammo I've seen 5.56 nato

What is the background on 9mm NATO ammo.
NATO.........North Atlantic Treaty Organization ammo, is ammo that has been agreed upon and standardized among NATO Member countries.

The first standardized NATO cartridge was the 7.62x51 in IIRC 1954 or there abouts. The 9mm Parabellum cartridge became a standardized NATO cartridge in the mid 1980s.

Being a NATO cartridge doesn't necessarily mean all countries in NATO that make or use it have exactly the same bullet weight or pressure loading. Just that it will work in all NATO Members weapons.

JM2c and may be a bit off on some points.

Should it should be fine in my new modern guns to use? I still have the reg target ammo.
Midway is selling it and gave a little info about.
        thanks
        ******** edit *****

whats good or bad about ball ammo?
is it bad for the barrel of the gun? harder to clean after shooting?
or just not going to hold on target what I'm aiming for?

sorry for the lame question, just never discussed with anyone in my life.
never has a NATO opportunity in 9mm

The term "BALL" ammo refers to full metal jacket military grade projectiles that are non-expanding as agreed upon by world treaties.

Fine for use in your pistols.

More suitable for personal self defense are other types of bullets like Semi WadCutters and Hollow Points. They do much more tissue damage upon impact and stop an aggressor quicker.

The ammo you have is always for self defense.

Ball ammo, if anything, feeds more reliably. It's fine for whatever you want to do. It will kill people just find, but don't expect the stopping power you'd get with hollow points.

                  Enjoy your purchase.

Balls ammo is just regular plinking FMJ ammo. Nothing more nothing less, you may use it for self defense but do not expect it to be having any stopping power. Maybe, killing power if you aim correctly and your POI hits in vital areas.

I remember reading that NATO ammo is loaded hotter than commercial ammo, similar to .223 and 5.56. I would check with the guns manufacturer before running it, just to be on the safe side.

NATO is most definitely loaded hotter but should be fine in any modern gun unless the manufacturer specifically says no. Also ball/FMJ will definitely kill but in HD, you want every bit of extra edge you can get. Just be sure to run enough of the HD ammo you choose to be sure it feeds and ejects reliably.

The only think I don't like about NATO 9mm is that the primers are often crimped, so I need to sort the brass out when reloading.

Winchester 9mm white box is 115 Grain and Winchester NATO 9mm is 124 Grain

I shoot a lot of 9mm Winchester NATO with my Beretta M9 and it loves it. Big 5 has it on sale sometime for just under $15 bucks. It is a hotter load so you get the practice shooting +P with out spending $1 a shot. cleans up about the same as regular ammo but the NATO a lot more fun to shoot. using it self defense ammo all i can say is i have 7 mags for my M9 first 2 are loaded with Hornady Critical Duty the other 5 Winchester NATO.
