    Overall length question.

I put together 10 rounds that came out to 2.75 length. I wanted 2.80. The specs are:
Hornady 168 Match bullet, 42gr IMR 4895 powder, random .308 brass, and federal primers.
Is there any danger in shooting these? The book says min length should be 2.80.

I would worry more about the random brass than five hundredths of an inch.

Per quickloads it would raise the pressure in the case a little under 2000psi. It looks like min load starts at 41g so you should be fine. prediction of 49K pressure with 62000 SAAMI max. Still look at primers etc for pressure signs when you shoot. I agree with the random brass warning, measure case volume on different cases it will affect pressure more than the .005 difference in seating depth.

Thanks for the fast answers. I should have said, its once fired from me. Just random cases.

He is .050 off of the target oal.

mlrs_27m, if you have a kinetic bullet puller you can give each one a couple taps to get them to grow longer than the 2.80 and then just reseat them to what you want.

              His question was
Is there any danger in shooting these?
The answer is no, you are safe. They may or may not perform well, but you are safe to shoot these.

                Random thoughts:

Random cases have random case capacities.

                Random capacities produce random pressures.

                Random pressures produce random velocities.

                Random velocities produce random accuracy.

Check your book, 2.81 is maximum length for .308. You can always pull them back out and re-seat them. Back your die out so you are seating longer than COL and adjust a little bit at a time to get your 2.80. you should be able to get it right on the money.

                    J-cat makes enormously good points.
I have worked up loads always segregating my brass and at minimum, point of impact is pretty different and on one occasion, I had squished primers (pressure sign)
If I had just mixed the brass for even a moderate load the target would have been pretty disappointing for all the effort of reloading.

^^^^^^this. $15 tool you should already have.

Are they safe? yeah. Are they what YOU wanted? no.

                        Some ranged thoughts:

a range of cases have a range of case capacities.
a range of capacities produce a range of pressures.
a range of pressures produce a range of velocities.
a range of velocities produce a range of precision.

The neat thought excercise is, what is the target precision goal (only fools and competitors pick "0" as a target), and does the range of variables produce a sufficient range of performance as to fall outside the desired control limits?

Thanks for the info guys. I picked up a bullet puller and all is well!!
