brass tumbling duration?

Just tumbled my first load of brass left it in for 4 hours. Just wondering how.long is long enough.

I use corn media and usually tumble for 1.5 hours when the media is new. Repeated use dulls the media and it will take longer and longer to get your brass looking clean. My rule of thumb is, if it takes 3-4 hours to do what used to take 1-2 hours to do, it is time to use fresh media. You can get it from Grainger's pretty cheap.

Thanks for the info. I'm using crushed English walnut with a little nufinish tossed in.

4 hrs is plenty. I use walnut & nu finish as well.

Full Disclosure......I stopped going for the bright shiny brass...I shoot USPSA and just make sure the load goes bang (safely).

I have never used walnut but am told it cleans faster than corn. However, I am also told it will not make it as shiny as corn will. But don't over-think it, either one works fine.

I use Corn Cob from Granger with Dillon Rapid Polish. I'm one of those that go for as shiny as I can. So I can leave it for 4 hours or even 8 hours if I want to just turn it on and forget about it. (Of course, the wife is not home when it's running)

I'm running the big Dillon CV-2001 Vibratory Case Cleaners.

I run mine outside. The walnut with nu finish leaves it shiny enough for me.

I did make a rookie mistake of tumbling different calibers at one time. I was able to get all but one case out of the larger case.

I run crushed walnut overnight and they get fairly clean but not wet tumbling clean. Change media when it takes much longer to clean the brass.

30 mins with crushed walnut and then 30 minutes with corn cob media and it's done.

Wet tumbling in stainless steel media is the only way to go

You can tumble it for days. Get a countdown timer like this:

I run mine on a timer for 2 hours.

I also use walnut (lizard bedding) and nu-finish. I go 1 hour, size the brass, then put it back in for another hour to remove the case lube. Purdy enough for me.
