Redding Competition Bushing 3-Die Neck Sizer Set

    Anyone use these?

I've been looking at a new die set which includes a micrometer top bushing neck sizing die.

The way I understand its function is that you use the adjustment to select how much of the neck you want to size?

Has anyone tested the results of a partial neck size, which apparently is supposed to help hold the bullet center to the bore. Any results to report one way or the other? Most of my brass will be fire formed to my chamber for multiple firings, so I am not sure if this is even a real benefit to me.

I have always associated bushing dies with neck turning since variations in the OD of the neck & case neck thickness can have an effect neck tension.

My standard practice is to use a body die when needed, and use a mandrel based neck die. This has served me really well on multiple cartridges so I am just trying to figure out if I want to change it up and try something new, or just keep doing what I usually do.

Yeah, you have to turn necks to get the full benefit.

These dies are for people who chase lands in short throated tight neck chambers. You can set up your load for minimum neck tension, play with the amount of sizing, and squeeze out the last drop of accuracy.

If you have a standard factory chamber these dies offer nothing.

The micrometer is on the seater die. Just makes it easier to adjust your seating depth

The bushing dies is not set to size different amounts of the neck. It is used to set the diameter of the neck before seating the bullet to get a specific amount of tension holding the bullet.

Unless you are sorting brass by weight, uniforming flash holes, turning necks for concentricity, etc. you don't need these dies and won't get any advantage using them.

The micrometer is also on the competition neck sizer die. I think he misspoke when he called it Type-S.

You are right, I was mistaken. Ill correct the thread title.

It isn't the Type S set, its just called the Competition Bushing 3 Die Neck Sizer Set.

For cartridges they stock, these are the only dies I use.
