Why does my die keep damaging my brass?

Making 8mm mauser from 30.06. Can't get it to work. Is my die bad?

I am going to take wild guess here and say that you are using the RCBS case lube pad - try the homebrew spray lube

rule of thumb: The case should feel lubed, but not look lubed.

I use Hornady unique case lube, comes in a small little butter dish type thing. A tiny little bit on my fingers, and with one hand holding the case by the neck, I apply a little to the case from the shoulder down, rotating the case between my thumb, index, and middle fingers. The final "stroke" is removing any excess. The small amount i put on my fingers is usually good for about 4-6 .30-06 cases. Then, I reapply.

I use hornady unique case lube too and it works great. Lately for 223, I get a1gallon Ziploc bag put a little fingertip full if lube and smear it on the inside and put about 1/3 full of brass in and work the brass inside the bag for a minute. I haven't had any issues with this method for me and 6,000 rounds yet. I haven't reloaded 30-06 since I've switched to the bag method though. But I did use unique with no issues on 30-06.

I am using Dillon lube. I'll try a couple more with less lube but it only happens when attempting to push the 30.06 neck down to make it 8mm. It doesn't matter if I trim em, and makes no difference if they Bottom out.

It takes care of normal 8mm brass no problem.

Clean out the vent hole on the side of your sizing die and apply less case lube.

Thanks guys. You were right. I woulda thought they put relief holes in the die somewhere. Had no idea they were sealed so tight when resizing

                  Thanks again!

Careful you don't bump that shoulder any more than necessary to chamber the round.

Why does too much lube case this? Does it happen when the case is entering the die or when it is exiting? I've seen this too, and using less lube does make the problem almost disappear (still have a tiny amount of shoulder damage).

Use light loads and re-fire form them and use as usual.

I think people called it hydraulic damage back when I researched why I was getting the same dents.

a couple more might not be enough if its in your die too.

The lube has no where to go and gets forced up around the shoulder, some dies have a vent hole and it gets caked up with old dried up lube and needs to be cleaned out. Swab out the die with a q-tip to get all the excess out also.
