    Reloading 223

I was wondering about reloading 223 ammo on a Dillon 550. I have the whole thing set up except for the last die and i was wondering if you do any kind of crimp on 223.Roll crimp, taper crimp or non at all? thanks.

No crimp, but I size the necks 0.004" smaller in inside diameter then the bullet outside diameter. You can crimp a bullet with a canalure, but at that point you're depending on the canalure lining up with the end of the case and meeting the OAL you need...not always possible.

For blasting ammo I get cheap bullets & use a friend's 550. For coyote ammo we both reload on my 30-year old Rock Chucker or a new model Redding turrent press. Powder charges are weighed individually, etc.

I've found it's worthwhile to pay attention to neck sizing and shoulder setback...resize bit by bit until the finished round chambers easily in your rifle; if you don't need interchangeability from gun to gun, get an RCBS or Stony Point seating gage and size the leade to your gun. (obviously making sure it will also fit the magazine.

If you must crimp, it's a taper for .223.

Depends on the bullet and intended use for the ammo.

For plinking ammo with cannelured bullets, crimp the ammo.
For match grade ammo to be used in a bolt gun, no crimp is necessary.
If the round is for semi-autos, some crimp will eliminate bullet set-back during feeding.
Taper crimp if there is no cannelure.
Taper or roll crimp if there is a cannelure.

Thanks for the replies. BTW the ammo is being loaded for an AR that I'm planning to use in 3 gun. I got some bullets from Midway and they have a cannalure but they are not necessarily the bullets I will stick with. So it sounds like I would be good going with the taper crimp for those?

i don't know how other people do it but i have to trim my brass so i dont know how they just run them through a progressive

so what i do is ilube resize deprime the brass then trim it and clean the mouth then i take the sized trimmed brass and run it through a 550 without the first die so
            station one primes
station two charges the case with win748
and stage 3 seats the bullet
i do not crimp because my sizer shrinks the neck enough that the bullet when seated actually expands the brass slightly works fine in my uppers and mini14

              That's how I do it.
The people that are loading in one pass are most likely using hornady one-shot and sizing/depriming in station one.
They are not trimming or deburring.

I size/decap/trim on one press and then prime/charge/seat/crimp on another press with a cleaning in between presses to remove the lube.
