    45 LC winchester trapper

    I have a Win 94AE trapper in 45 LC built about 1996.

Is there a chart or table that would show what loads are safe in this gun, or am I limited to pretty much 'cowboy shooting' loads?

    thanks for any replies,

    Jim

The Lyman manual breaks cartridges down into catagories based on gun strength. Usually black powder, modern, strong action/single shot and pistol or rifle.

    Win 94
    250 grain Jacketed XTP/HP
    Powder/2400 = 17.5gr (max)
    1236 fps

You have to remember it's a pistol cartridge, not a rifle cartridge. Good brush gun.

I would say any standard 45 LC loads should be fine...but stay away from anything labeled as a "Ruger and TC Contender" load.

My regular 45 LC plinking load is 5.X grains of unique.

YMMV, double-check all internet reloading recipes, you are responsible, I am not responsible, etc.

        Having said that, try...

A: Factory equivalent: 7.1grs of Win 231 under a Lyman Ideal 454190 cast from wheel weights, or a Remington 250gr lead factory bullet.

        B: Moderate load: 9.0grs Unique under a 265 to 270gr Keith SWC.

        C: Heavier load: 18.5grs of 2400 under a 265 to 270gr Keith SWC.

From the www: John Linebaugh says a 255 swc over 8 grains of HP-38 will stem-to-stern a whitetail at 100 yards. No need to break your wrist with bear/elk loads. Find what shoots comfortably for you and is accurate. Remember, the cartridge was originally developed to shoot the horses out from under plains Indians.

I like Unique in general, in everything from semi-auto pistols to light lead bullet loads in C&R guns and all points in between.

Please double check everything above against at least 2 current reloading manuals.

Thanks to all for the info.

I'll keep in mind the Ruger and TC advice, and maybe try a few different rounds for fun.

I should see if I can get the Lyman manual and read up on it myself.

Thanks again this site is great, although I wish I knew enough to contribute answers once in a while instead of only asking questions.

          I'll eventually get there.

Actually, a quick google search will reveal that the 94 can handle high pressure 45 LC loads.
