Ever seen case mouths like this

I was prepping some 223 brass and while deburring I felt something that didn't quite feel right. I examined the brass closer thinking maybe there was a split mouth and noticed that the mouth looked like what I would call the Rook from a chess board.

As I'm fairly new to reloading, one year and only around 2500 rounds of various calibers, I'm wondering if any one else has ever seen brass like this. I've attached shots of the head stamp and of the case mouth.

    Appreciate any comments.

That is standard military crimped brass. Lee FCD only has 4 crimps spaced 90 degrees apart. That one looks like it has 5 or 6 crimps on the neck.

I have new Winchester (WCC) military 5.56 cartridges that have that exact crimp. The primer also has a crimp ring.

You're right. Looking from my little phone, I didn't notice that there were more than 4 notches. I stand corrected.

I was thinking it was some sort of crimp. First time I've seen any like there. Learned something new today which means the day was not a total loss.

              Thanks for the info.

Yeah it's a crimp most of the time when you trim the brass it goes away. I've had lots of 556 brass that way. Once it's sized and trimmed I don't see it any more

Yup, like everyone else mentioned. It's just a military crimp. I saw 400 cases of it last night while prepping 5.56.

When I was first starting reloading I used to toss cases I picked up from the range with those crimps. I threw out a bunch of good brass .

Not an issue at all, I don't even seperate them from casings with the same headstamp that don't have the crimp.

I'm surprised Texan didn't notice the primer crimes.
