45/70 and 45 govt are the same --
your 45 govt case may have been reformed to 40/65 or another size --
what is the diameter of the bullet ?

No kidding. Get a caliper for $10 at Harbor Freight - you have probably 0.1" difference in bullet diameter. That is huge.

That one thats necked down is not a 45-70 govt. and most modern head stamps for this cartridge don't usually leave out the "70". Don't know what you got there on the right buts its definitely not a 45-70. EDIT: I see you posted the dia. Its not a .375 cartridge I'm familiar with, maybe an old version of .375 flanged? The .375 flanged were for old double rifles.

I found a few in my garage but I've had them for a long time. Top ones are 45/70 bottom are 45 gov. I thought 45 gov was 45/70, I guess someone necked these cases down ???

Interesting. It doesn't quite look right for a .375 flanged. Its got to be some wildcat based on a necked down .45-70. Maybe you should check the cartridge collectors forums.

It looks like a .38-56 WCF. Check this out:

45 govt is an older marking for 45/70 - I have several boxes of rem brass.
They appear to be reformed 45-70 to 38/56
You can see the slight bottle neck in the larger photo -
Not collectable but certainly desired by someone with a 38/56 --

I will take a shot at it and say the long obsolete 38-70 , brass can be made from 45-70
