    IMR 4064 and 4895

Good day at the range this afternoon. It was .308 day.
Took out my Rem 700 SPS and an LR 308. That one has a 24" bull barrel.
With both guns I was shooting consistent quarter to fifty cent sized 5 shot groups at 100 yards.

The brass, bullet, load, and OAL for both powders we identical.

168 Sierra Match King over 38 grains either powder with an OAL of 2.80
I'm using Dillon full length resizing dies (small base) and weighing each charge on a charge master.
As for my groups, I think I could have done better with the rem 700. I seem to be pretty tight on the first three shots then I choke. Forth shot opens up and then I get it back for the fifth.

I've not chrono'd these yet but I'm wondering if anyone else has landed on a similar situation. Kind of nice having one OAL too. Anytime I don't have to tweak the dies is a good thing.

I worked these loads up previously for the rem and never had the occasion to shoot them side by side. Let alone with two different platforms. When I first laddered them I took them to around 40.5 to 41gr and groups were all about the same. Figured I'd just save the powder and go with the 38gr.

Next time I get a chance to shoot at the 200 yard range I'll bring these again and see what happens to the groups then.

Outstanding shooting getting those tight groups, it is a low charge but accuracy trumps speed in my book if you aren't trying to reach the limits of the 308. I get awesome groups in my LR308 with 41.5g of IMR4064 & 168g hornady hpbt.

I've shot the 165 grain Hornady BTSP over 44 grains of IMR4064 for over 30 years.

Your load is actually below the minimum recommended load on the Hodgdon website which can result in consistency issues.

I like imr4064 , 43 gr with the 168 gr International , same commercial case, same primer. I also s/b size & set my length to fit the mag on my auto loader. I used the same load in my 700. Shot better than I could.

Weigh your projectiles and separate them into groups. This should help with that flyer.

I use 42.0 grains of IMR4064 for my rifles in 308. And, I never measure the OAL. I measure the ogive. It is more consistent that measuring the OAL to the tip of the bullet. My loads were very consistent with standard deviation of less than 10 fps, and very good group.

My standard load for accuracy in my chamber is:
              168gr SMK, 2.800", 44.4gr IMR 4064.
              I can't remember the velocity offhand, 2,775ish. I know I am 3.95 Mil at 600 yards with a 100 yard zero.

38gr is REALLY low. That's below Hodgdon's starting load. If you are happy with it, that's fine, but it's probably a very slow load. Doesn't 168gr FGMM use 43.Xgr of a similar powder? 168gr FGMM is pretty accurate, but kind of slow.

                Update.

So I got these out to the 200 yard range this am and they are still good to go for 100 yard plinkers. At two hundred yards the 4895 stays pretty tight for grouping and as others have stated, the 4064 really shows its slowness.
The 4064 drops more than the 4895 and the groups opened up a tad.
I will go back to drawing board for loads on these for 200 yards.
                Thanks for the feedback.

To the OP, I too suggest you up your charge weights.

Well established match load for gas guns, i.e.; M1-A is 41.5 grs, IMR 4895, w/ a 168 grn match bullet.

Several loads have been suggested, it is always helpful to include if the load was worked up or used in a bolt, semi, pump etc.

                  A load I liked in a Savage 99, .308 Win. is , 42 grns, IMR4064 w/ various 165 pills.
