.45 win mag ammo pro's and con's?

I have a 45 win mag barrel for my contender , I havent actually fired it but I have gave it some thought . I have so many barrels I just havent got to it .
I dont know for sure if a 45 acp die would be long enough to do the win mag case but my 454 casull dies will . The contender is not a real recoil friendly design so I have gave consideration to the fact that 45 colt case is within 2% case volume of the win mag and therefore I belive that is should be perfectly safe in my contender to use 45 colt load data in the win mag case ,even the 45 colt load data for the Ruger/Contender I would think should be safe since the operating pressure is only about 65% of the win mag .
The above is only my opinion , I am by no means any kind of expert so It is up to you to decide what is safe in your guns , It is always safest to use the load data in the book that is for the cartridge you are loading .Last edited by 22popnsplat; 09-07-2008, 8:39 PM. -
45ACP dies won't work. What will you be shooting it through?
...in an LAR Grizzly....it's a hoot! (you always get looks at the range the first time you light one off) Not a terribly practical pistol (kind of like a Desert Eagle), but fun none the less. The only other pistol I can think of (Wildey) is about the same.... It's been a long time since I loaded WinMag....I'd have to try to find my load data, but from what I recall, it was a 230gr with a charge of H110 under it at about 1400fps....
What did you have in mind?Comment

Basic 45acp dies won't work. Horandy makes a combo set that works for 45acp, 45 ar, 45 win mag and 45 LC. Part #044554 in Titanium Nitride.
I found HS-7 a good powder for the round if you can find any on the shelf."The California matrix of gun control laws is among the harshest in the nation and are filled with criminal law traps for people of common intelligence who desire to obey the law." - U.S. District Judge Roger T. Congrats on the Grizzly! They are a lot of fun.
Price of ammo is really high. Reloading is definitely the way to go. Order yourself some Starline brass directly from Starline (their price direct was pretty good last time I checked).
As for dies, there are a couple of not too expensive options:
You can load anywhere from mild to wild. When we had guests at work from Japan that wanted to go shooting, I brought one of my Grizzly's and some "special" loads (260gr hot handloads). After warming up with 9mm and 45, we moved on to the WinMag. One guy put 3 rounds down range and was shaking so bad, he put the pistol down and walked away...
Beautiful pistol. Pickup mags when you can find them. I got lucky and picked up a copule more spares via e-Bay a couple of years back for about $25/ea. If you can find them for under $90 or so each, pick them up.
Enjoy!Comment
