7mm Remington Magnum Reloading Data

I dearly love my 7mm Remington Magnum but it delivers a mule kick when I press the trigger. I've been looking for some data as to reloading it to about 7mm-08 velocities. Does anybody have any good data?

Trail boss will give you a low recoil round but the velocities are low.

Go on the powder company web sites and look up the 7-08 data. Using magnum primers will raise the listed pressure a little but you need that big spark to ignite the smaller powder charge in a magnum case.

You could use cream of wheat to fill the unfilled powder space and use minimum charges, compressed with dry cream of wheat on top.

Ah, you're in luck today. One of my buddy's had the same issue and it was solved using Ken Waters Pet Loads Book. The load we pulled from his book for reduced 7mm Remington Magnum was 40.0gr IMR4064 with a 175gr SP.

I will not claim that load is safe in your rifle, that is up to you to decide. Either purchase or borrow the book, it has some really good loads and info. We ended up using that 40 gr IMR 4064 load with the Remington 175gr core locked soft point and Winchester Large Rifle primers. Very accurate at 100 yds and it printed similar point of impact as full power. Not sure how, but I would guess that the slower velocity (around 2200fps), left the bullet in the barrel longer than full power loads, so the recoil may have raised the barrel a bit more than the faster full power loads by the time the reduced load bullet exited the muzzle. Nothing scientific, just my guess.

Yes "Pet Loads" books are excellent; I got mine 20+ years ago. They are dated, do not have latest cartridges, bullets, or powders. But the loading techniques etc are great to read.
