I've never had problems with Winchester LR in the Garand, either. Matter of fact, that's what I use for the M1.
There's just something wrong with Winchester SR with 5.56 pressure loads in the AR. Maybe I got a bad batch, but a couple of fellow Service Rifle competitors had the same issues with the primers and anvils popping. Everyone I know uses a magnum or benchrest SR variant for AR Service Rifle.
Although, I tried CCI Small Rifle 400 (non-magnum) and they seemed fine.

I've been using Winchester SR primers in both my Spacegun and Service riffle AR for about 6 months now and have used about 2K of them without a single hiccup'Just Don't Point, Squint, and Laugh! '

What causes the firing, the bolt hitting or the firing pin sliding? Seems the bolt face will not touch the primer, but the firing pin can move around. Maybe a lighter firing pin like titanium?
So far no problems with Winchester small rifle primers, all have shot ok. I did have a couple of duds with Tulas.Comment

I got slams with CCI SRP's . if you ask CCI they say to use CCI #41 in an ar15. Harder cup and desensitized anvil angle. CCI mag primers use the same cup. I use both.
My slams were with one particular batch of CCI standard primers, so 2 of 2000 slammed. Just a double tap. An ar15 can't slam firr out of battery (inertial pin slam fire anyhow).
