Powder coating made easy part 2, piglet method

I decided to start a new tread because the piglet powder coat method is a lot different then the dry tumble method.
The Harbor Freight black would not cover with the dry tumble.
So I followed this link http://www.300blktalk.com/forum/view...84219&start=20
    Using lacquer thinner.
The black broke down into the mix then I added the pills and started swirling.
After the mix turned sticky but still wet I dumped them (here's where I changed things up a little) on the parchment paper.
I used a dental tool to stand them up and the mix was the consistency of tacky paint.
If it gets to tacky just ad a little thinner.
The black came out ok. Not perfect but not bad. Not to sure if the black is a little abrasive or not so.
I then put some more thinner in the tub and added some white.
When things started mixing and getting thick it was the color of battle ship gray.
I think this batch came out the best.
I still had a little color in the tub but it looked like things had dried.
I added a little more thinner and more pills, shake things up again.
This time the pills came out a little darker gray in a smooth matte finish.
All 3 runs where 1 coat only.
I did a smash test on all 3 batches and found no flaking with any of them.

I use acetone, and use reynolds non-stick foil. it works better. I also use one of these:

to stand my longer .30 cal bullets up in.

One thing I noted from that 300blktalk thread was powder quality. Lot's of posters there have mentioned Powder by the Pound as a source of higher quality, more "forgiving" powder than the HF offerings.

They also sell it in 2 oz. sample packs. The sample packs are found by selecting a specific powder, and using the drop down window for the quantity/weight selection.

www.prismaticpowders.com has better powders and cheaper in most cases.

what is that and how are you using it? Do the bullets fit precisely in the holes or...?

I spray my bullets, so I made a jig of 1/2" oak, and drilled some 9/32 holes. I place a sheet of foil on it and press the bullets into the holes through the foil. The gas check portion of the bullet fits into the hole and it holds it securely. Since I use gas checks anyway, the uncoated portion of the gas check area is covered with the gas check.

But if you are having success with a premade grill pan that holds the bullets without falling over, I'd be very interested.

Its a vegetable grilling tray. i found it in the home and garden section of my PX. probably have them at walmart too. my 9mm and .380 bullets fit nose down just fine...like how an egg sits in one of those wire dippers that come in easter egg kits.

i put another tray underneath and use this grill tray to stand my .300 blackout rounds up. since they are long and fall over easily, this helps keep them aligned and standing. it does the job well.

I just ordered a LB of gloss black and a LB of blue.
The HF matte black felt like I was trying to size a grinding stone.
Might work for lapping a barrel but I'm no putting it in my barrels.
The mixed in white felt much smoother.

Yeah, but smallest order is 1lb.

Seems like a lb of powder is a lifetime supply....I may be misreading some of the posts, but for the dry coat/piglet method, powder consumption was really small.

How many 1000's of bullets can you coat with a lb.?

I do think a LB would be a life time supply.
A sample kit with a lot of colors in a small amount would be a great thing.
If anyone knows a supplier that sell like this let me know.
In the mean time if anyone wants some gloss blue and black in trade for different colors, let me know.
Maybe we could get a PC trade tread going.

Do you lube them prior to sizing?

How do they seat in the case?

No lube needed, just size (if you want) and load.
Just stay away from that HF Matte Black
That stuff felt like trying to size a rock.
                      Any gloss will work.
I made a deberring tool to chamfer the bottom of the projectiles.
They run through my bullet feeder with no issues.
