    Lee Auto Prime question

So I was looking at the paperwork that came with my Hand Press, and it says that the Lee Auto Prime is ONLY safe with CCI and Winchester primers.

What the hell? Is that accurate?

No! You should be able to use any primer you want.

Your question made me go look at my priming tools, lee and RCBS. Both have the same configuration, a flat push pin. My Herters and Lachmiller tools have both cupped and flat pins, to accommodate both cupped and flat style of primers. I never thought about it before but perhaps primers are no longer cupped as well as flat. I have not bought any in quite a while -- nor noticed when I did buy -- While it would not be particularly dangerous the flat pin could crush/break the priming compound of a cupped primer causing a misfire -- just and old guys thoughts.

Nah, Richard Lee was just having a peeing match with the competition at the time.

So you get told not to use the product with the competitions product.

Part of the reason is that they want to cover their a**. Other primers are probably softer and Lee is worried about you activating one right near your hand. Just don't activate a primer, that's all you gotta do.

My CCI BMG primers are dome shaped and they are only a couple years old.

FWIW - I've used CCI, Remington & Winchester primers with no ill effects (got all ten fingers & my 2 front teeth ). YMMV

I have used my lee auto prime on Remington, CCI, Winchester, Federal, and Wolf primers, it works fine.

This topic has been beat to death on every gun site I visit, and the consensus is always the same-use any primer you want with the Lee tool. I've use Fed, CCI, and Win, with no problems of any kind.
