    Longshot, H110 .357 question

Lee shows information for Longshot and H110 for .357, 158 gr. XTP but nothing for lead. Working on loads for Xtreme 158 plated.
Would this be reaching to far or do these powders have something against 158 lead?

    Thanks for any assistance.

They all assume you can't shoot that fast without leading, or so I think.

lead should have less pressure than the equivalent weight jacketed bullet. Start there. Don't go less though. I've heard H110 needs to be close to the max charge in order to burn properly. I safely loaded the minimum H110 charge for a 158 jacketed bullet but substituting hardcast lead. Somewhere around 11 grains IIRC.

for lead you'll nee a faster burn rate. Lead moves more easily... so the pressure wont keep up. Worst case, you'll get a bunch of unburnt powder in your barrel and cylinder that can make unloading and reloading a hassle.

That happened to me! Well I didn't shoot enough to cause extraction problems but it was very dirty. Lots of unburnt powder. Thanks for explaining! Would 2400 be better for .357 with lead?

I would go even faster, unique, w231, titgroup, trail boss. Look at hodgdon.com for the 158gr lswc data for ideas on powder and loads

If you're not pushing those lead bullets to magnum velocity I would use a faster burning powder like 231 or Red Dot. If the lead bullets you have are rated (brinell 12 or higher) for magnum speed then H110 should be okay.

              I'm using 15.5gr of H110 with 158gr Xtreme bullets. No problems at all out of a 4" S&W 586.

Thank you for the responses, checking the Lyman book it does list H110 for 155 gr. at 15.0 t0 15.7.
Cindynles hit the mark and read the book a while back. Now to load a few xtremes and see how my Dan likes em,
                Thanks again

I've had good results with 2400 under the X-Treme 158gr plated SWC. It's a bit faster than H110, doesn't require a magnum primer and tolerates downloading a bit better.

2400 is GRRRRREEEAAAT!!!!! It works great with cast boolits.

Sounds like you need the Lyman cast bullet hand book. If you are into shooting cast boolits it is a must have.

I do appreciate the responses that have been given and the advice on powders to use. One problem is that at this time not many powders are available in this area and some were not first choice.
Not being able to get first choice I am trying other powders and hopefully learn a little more.

                        Thanks again.

I have lots of unburnt powder in the slower magnum powders- lil gun, 296, 4227, 300mp, with good tight crimps magnum primers and even compressing down the load with reduced OAL.
2400 is the slowest i would go.
using 4" barrrels sp101 and gp100 fwiw. dont have excessive cylinder gaps either.
If you find 231 let me know!!!
