    22LR Velocities

If CCI Mags come out my 20" barrel at 1235 FPS, how fast would it be coming out of a 7" Barrel?

    My guess is 1053 fps.

I recommend taking a chronograph to the range and finding out.
Why does the velocity even matter at this point?
Just go shoot and learn where to hold it to hit at multiple distances.

It all depends on the burning rate of the powder, if you reload, you can calculate base on how much time needed to burn the whole powder, how much time to exit the barrel... We do not reload 22LR and CCI varies too much, one time I measure 1200fps, next time on a new box/batch of the same gun, it is only 1000fps.

it is impossibel to guess , I fired some 22 wolf match out of a 26 inch rifle barrel and it came out at 1045 fps , from the same box of wolf I fired a few from my contender pistol with a 14 inch barrel at 1105 fps . That is not a typo , it is faster in the shorter pistol barrel ! I would think that it is going to vary by brand as to how long of a barrel is going to produce the highest velocity

Yes, this has to do with the fact that the bullet actually peaks in velocity while still in the barrel of the rifle and is slowing down before it exits the muzzle. Wolf Match ammo is designed to be shot out of rifle length barrels for that 1080~ fps MV.

This is why you see 22LR specifically made for pistols, such as the Lapua Pistol King and Pistol OSP lines.

22lr are loaded with a fast powder. I can't recall who exactly but some decades back I read some barrel length test articles. The gist was that 22lr reaches maximum velocity between 12-16" of barrel length; somewhat dependent on chamber dimensions, bore dimensions/rifling, bore finish, etc. After about 20-22" the pressure has diminished enough that the bullet is nolonger accelerating. Theoretically this might have a benefit on accuracy, since there will be even less turbulence of the bullet base upon exit.

Wolf match target ran 1007fps avg for 20 rounds from my 20" Green Mountain 10-22 barrel at angeles about a month ago or so.

I remember Wolf MT clocking 1050~ out of the H&R M12 (26" barrel) I bought from the CMP last year.

I'll have to look in my notes, but I recall my friend getting 1060~ out of his custom benchrest 22LR (Hall action with a 26" Shilen IIRC) when we were comparing chronographs.
