We had a student make some brass from 9mm luger and load a box worth today at the LA County Chapter Reloading Club Clinic. So, yea, there are some here who load it. Bumslie was the instructor who helped the student and walked him through it.

Bumslie, I have a question for you regarding 9x18. Does the cut down 9 Luger brass have a lot of impact on powder capacity compared to factory 9x18 brass?

I bought some Starline 9x18 brass and I'm wondering if it was a mistake. Is cut down 9 Luger brass just as good?

A lot of impact? Not in my experience. If I recall correctly, 9mm Luger is a tad thicker thicker than makarov, but it hasn't made any impact, to me anyway, converting and shooting the brass.

Why would buying starline brass be bad? In reality it's a good thing, because the headstamps are marked with the proper 9x18 markings. With 9mm Luger, you need to mark the case somehow to identify that's the brass you shortened. I sharpie in the extractor grove, and mark across the headstamp to make it easy to tell which is the brass that I converted into makarov brass. I would hate for any reloader to pick up the brass that I converted without knowing it's not really 9mm Luger .



You're using such small amounts of powder anyway ~3 grains, you won't be able to tell that there is difference.

Personally, If I had the spare cash, I would just buy makarov brass to save myself the headache of trimming and marking each one. I have 27lb cat litter tub practically full of military 9mm brass that I recieved for free, which is the only reason why I convert it.

Bumslie, thanks for the info. Now I don't feel as bad about shelling out for 1000 Starline cases. Thought I wasted cash, buying cases that can be made inexpensively and just as good...until you mentioned the significance of the Headstamps. I feel a lot better now

You're welcome. I use Missouri bullet co 93gr lead projectiles to fire out of my East German makarov. They work great. Have fun reloading.

I have a question for you Bumslie!

Since I wasn't able to observe your process, do you trim, size, and trim again if necessary, or do you size and then trim (assuming the die doesn't crush the case mouth)?

1. Take fired 9mm cases, run them into 9mm makarov expanding/flaring die first. Bell the crap out of them. You want to make the case as close to true straight wall as possible. You're going to trim 1mm off anyway, so extreme flaring should not cause any worry to the integrity of the brass.

2. Resize cases in 9mm makarov die. Now they are near perfect straight wall cases.

3. Trim cases. We used a Forster trimmer, and a lee ball cutter with trim length gague. Cases should be ~ .708 max case length is .714.

Don't forget to chamfer and debur.

4. You can either send these through the sizing die again, or move straight to flaring. I've done both, but usually resize again just to keep my process the same if I wasn't converting cases.

We used Lead 93gr Missouri bullet. OAL .970
