    Reloading Safety

I'm getting started with reloading and have read through various threads the last few weeks about certain safety concerns, some obvious and others not so much. This is probably my area of most concern, so thought it would be good to find that safety info in one location. Thanks guys!

    Please follow this format:

    1) state the safety issue
    2) why it is a safety issue
    3) the remedy
    4) equipment or tools you recommend for remedy

    Smoking while loading

    Fire could ignite powder

    Don't smoke while loading

      Annealing primed brass

Heat could set off primer, shooting it across your cave

      Deprime brass prior to annealing

      Universal decapping die

        I'll play.

accidental detonations and brass debris while trimming

you'd like to keep the ability to see things when something detonates or shrapnel flies, don't you?

        wear safety glasses

        glasses...

          1) Getting struck by lightning while reloading
          2) Could blow up your precious supply of scarce powder/primers
          3) Reload indoors
          4) Lightning rod/grounded reloading bench

            Primer Storage

Primers stored outside their factory container can detonate on impact.

            Don't store primers loosely together

            Factory trays

Don't do metal work near your reloading bench unless you cover everything with a canvas tarp and have accounted for every primer you dropped a month ago.
A spark could land at the exact spot where a primer was and go poof.
              Ask me how I know.

Everything was put away safely and the canvas was as much for dust as anything but that one primer sounded like a power cord that got hit by a skill saw.
Now I do primer roll call like its a prison.

Don't hit the sause while reloading. Its best to keep a clear mind.

                    Loading 223 with Bullseye powder.

25grs of Bullseye raises pressures to an unsafe level.

                    Use Varget instead.

                    Published load data.

                          Loading with wrong powder

Worst case = spontaneous disassembly of firearm

One bottle of powder on bench at a time.

Start from scratch when changing calibers
