Is it common to come across poorly reloaded black tip?

Asking because I got my hands on some with some strange fluting on the brass that I can pull the bullets out with my fingers and the primers are protruding easily 2mm beyond the case head. They're all also 2.90" overall length and would melt snow in hell if they actually fit in a case gauge.

Seems like they were reloaded at some point, but it had to have been a LONG time ago given the patina on them, and while it's clear enough these are some really really REALLY bad reloads, I've honestly never come across black tip, reloaded or factory new.

These things aren't going anywhere near any of my rifles in the state they're in now since I like having functional weapons and my face has a natural aversion to explosions, but I'm genuinely curious if anyone here has come across something similar.

I see the M2 Black Tip projo's for sale occasionally as pulls from old surplus 30.06. There is a decent amount of info floating around on how to load them effectively for 308, but I'm not sure how CA law would view that--because they forbid "armor piercing pistol ammo", and 308 pistols have been made.

I have never run into commercially produced black tip 30.06 or 308, but you can find old stuff on Gunbroker for exorbitant prices.

IMO, fluting on the brass always spells "HK fluted chamber" to me, so somebody may have tried to reload in a case that was too far used and abused.

pull them down, the AP projectiles are worth at least $1 a piece.

Well, I did some simple research and my suspicions turned out to be correct.

These are about the worst reloads I'm likely to ever come across in my life and the fluted brass is a signature mark of once fired H&K cartridges.

It's almost comical actually, how bad these are. Some of them aren't even sized and the ones that are are smashed down to the point that the shoulder is actually a little flared out, and that's not even counting the half seated primers.

I really didn't expect to come across AP reloads, even when presented with such glaringly obvious evidence. Looks like my bullet puller is going to get a workout tonight while I break down these aberrations and throw away everything minus the projectiles.

God only knows what kind of powder and primers the guy who put these together used. Wouldn't surprise me if I measured 48 grains of powder and decapped magnum primers out of them.

well, not everyone should get into reloading, some people just don't have the skills or attention to detail for such a serious task, the guy who loaded the rounds you are talking about is one of those individuals.
