Newbie question: Xtreme bullet 150gr .308

    Hi everyone,

I bought some Xtreme bullet 150 gr .308 a while ago hoping that I can use them on my Savage 16 .308 without do in any research (newbie mistake). Now after some research I realized these bullets are plated and shouldn't go past 1500 fps. Searching for some plinking recipe online, I found that other have use reduced pistol powder with these bullets as plinking round.. I have a couple of questions:

    1. Is it ok to use a reduce rifle powder (IMR4895) like around 20 grains to produce these blinking round?
    2. Why does others use a reduce pistol powder instead of a reduce rifle powder for plinking their rounds?

Any suggestion or recommendation on how to load these Xtreme bullet is much appreciated. Thank you...

Read through this thread, it might answer some of your questions.

Trail Boss chart, if you can find this powder it's great for reduced rifle loads.

I would not download 4895 unless you found a published load for it.

There is published data for cast bullets, I have loaded .308 plated Xtreme bullets in 7.5 Swiss starting with mid range cast data and it worked well. I am sure you will find loads for 4227, 3031, 4198, Unique and probably a few others.

Google "Ed Harris, the load" and I am sure you can find something over on http://castboolits.gunloads.com/forum.php There are several discussions on "the load" there.

I've even told to always use Speer lead load data for xtreme bullets pistol and rifle.
