What is the Best desiccant for storing Ammo? Silica Gel?

How much does one need to put in a .50 cal ammo box?

Can it be loose or does it have to be in a packet?

How would rice work as a desiccant?

Inquiring minds want to know...........

I would order the 20 gram packets off or eBay or Amazon that's the cheapest and easiest way or buy a bulk bag and use coffee filters and staple them shut with desiccant inside.

I always save the ones that come in my packages. Just throw them in the microwave to recharge them when needed. If not, just buy some online or at the local crafts store and use coffee filters or empty tea bags and staple them shut.

You really do not need to use any. I have ammo stored from the early 1960's(commercial/mil/reloads) that is still just fine.
I have ammo made in the 1930's and one box made in 1887 which is still good.
Do not over think it. Just do not store it in water and you will be good.

I agree...My collection of vintage (FA 37/40)ammo looks as good as the day it left the factory.

Cat litter in a sock works well, but here in Ca the humidity is so low that I don't think it's necessary.

I have used nitrogen from a pony bottle to fill a 50 cal ammo can with loose ammo and it works great. The problem with rice or any other organic is if there is any humidity in the can, it will mold and ruin the ammo.

Rice works great - I use it for electronics and ammo. A half a cup of raw, uncooked rice in an old sock (pantyhose works fine). Heat the rice in a microwave first to dry it, then put in the sock and place in the ammo can. Uncooked rice is a great sponge for water in the air!
