    forster case trimmer problems =\

Just set up my new case trimmer, and the course stop moves during/after every single case resizing. Everything seemed to be going normal in the beginning so i stopped checking every case after i trimmed...so annoying.

I have the set screw tightened down almost to the point of breaking the hex key, and it still moves.

Has anyone else had this problem with their forster case trimmer? How'd you fix it, I'm about to drill and tap a hole into the shaft.

Something is probably wrong with the set screw. Maybe it's not catching on the shaft anymore. Call up Forster and they will probably send you another one.

When I owned a Forster trimmer, I would get inconsistent lengths, so I eventually went with something else.

Long shot, but is there a flat spot or indentation on the shaft that you're missing?

I had a friend that had some issues with the Forster trimmer he had and he sent it back to Forster and they remedied the problem and sent it back to him pretty fast. I've trimmed on his trimmer and it's worked perfectly for me. Try to give their customer service a call.

You're doing something wrong. A set screw into a shaft is going to hold it. Not a lot of thrust during trimming. Regardless of what kind of nonsense you think..I've had that trimmer for 20 years; it works. The total lack of mechanical ability in Kali makes me want to puke.

                Maybe degrease/clean up the shaft?

Just throwing out ideas here. I have a 15+ year old Forster and I love it.

If you drill into the shaft, you won't be able to adjust it.

I say to just give Forster a call and see what they say. They may just send you a new one. Never know.

Wow, wow, wow. Such anger, such stangman86gt angst!
Still can't figure it out, can you? Something is sliding in or out, and you don't know which. Probably neither. You're not getting the brass fully inserted into the collet. Grab the collet and pull it, in or out. No movement? Probably. If it doesn't move, how does the brass get trimmed to different lengths?

I've had a Forster for 20 years. If I didn't get the brass all the way into the collet, it cut it short.

What is an E-Peen thing? That's something I never heard of...something up near the Oregon border thing?

                    Update;

Just saw the edited version of the version of what stangman86gt posted....

Is it possible there are two set screws piggy-backed?

is the fine tune screw on the side moving as in loose mine works fine,
sit and look at if and slowly go throught the motions.

i have had problems when I used the wrong collet some fit the brass base too loose or tight maybe swap around the collet thing see if that helps.

This is my next course of action, just gonna degrease the part on the shaft where the set screw sits.

And to gunboat, nope its just the one course set screw, not a piggy back.

and lastly to bruce, the fine screw is working as it should...the collet seems fine..fits nice and snug.

thanks for all the suggestions, i'll degrease tomorrow, and hopefully that will help...guess that new wd40 lube works better than i thought possible.

                          thanks again,
                          mike

to be sure - you are not tightening the stop collar fine adjustment lock screw by mistake... appears to be 180 off from the course adjustment shown in link below

the Forster was my first trimmer and though it was good, I never much cared for the collet design... I am not using a LE Wilson, which I recommend to anyone.
