Non canuler bullets in an AR?

How many use these? I hate crimping and have a bunch of these to load, I'm thinking it will be fine for plinking and Yote hunting only.

In many years of competition, I have never seen anyone shoot a bullet WITH a cannelure. And nobody crimps their ammo either, regardless of caliber.

Many bullets don't have the cannelure and if you don't crimp it's not anything you'd need anyway. All of my .224 match bullets have no cannelure and I use them for AR15, .220 Swift and .22-250 without problem. I don't crimp my reloads; in my experience the neck tension is sufficient to hold the bullet.

i agree no need to crimp, if you feel that you must, use a lee factory crimp die

i dont crimp my "precision" loads or any bullet that does not have a cannelure. With that said, if you feel the need to crimp, I would only crimp plinking ammo that has a cannelure OR if you are creating SHTF ammo and its stuff that will stay in a can for some time, then I would crimp those, provided they have a cannelure as well.

Crimping is not necessary if your neck tension is adequate. Crimping is desirable when there is a cannelure to roll into because it increases bullet pull and prevents bullet setback during feeding. In the former, increased bullet pull helps combustion in arctic temeperatures. In the latter, the case mouth rolled in the cannelure stops the bullet from setting back if neck tension is inadequate as it sometimes may be due to manufacturing tolerances. If you pay attention and make precise ammo, you won't need to crimp because neck tension alone will hold the bullet in place.

I've always viewed crimping as more of a "just in case" seen in ammunition designed for military and or more-rugged applications; that is to say, extreme constant banging around and what not may over time cause ammunition to loosen up.

its not necessary for commercial and home made ammo, even if the bullet has a cannelure. its just a preference. I recommend experimenting with it to figure out what your particular firearm likes, but then again crimping (within reason) doesn't dramatically increase pressure.

If you are making ammo that needs a crimp because of setback your neck tension is totally cocked up, the fix is not to crimp but rather figure out why your neck tension is cocked up.

I have never crimped anything my self actually I don't even own a set of crimp dies and I have not shot the rifle yet, it's my first AR and was just making sure. Thanks guys

25 plus years of loading for ARs.Never crimped.That goes for 308,6.8 as well.
I do,sometimes crimp large recoiling,hunting calibers that tend to get set back in a box magazine.Like 375H&H,300RUM,300WM,300WSM.They still get pounded though.

The only bullets I have with a cannelure are my cheap plinkers and they do not get crimped. All of my other bullets do not have a cannelure at all.

I crimp my 45 auto loads. Crimped some 223 w/o a cannelure using a Lee die. That way I won't move the bullet when using it as my bullet button tool!

If you need crimp for that, then your neck tension is insufficient.
