Dillon 550B, why do I need one?

Sooo.. I got a 550B in a trade... it's worn, basically stripped, I think the primer stuff is there.

Anyone have a reason why 550B's are worth keeping, truthfully I am not fond of manual indexing?

I just returned my RCBS Summit press since it sat in the box since I bought it. Still using my other presses. Current Press Stable is 650XL/W casefeeder, Hornady LNL AP and Forster Co-Ax.

My reloading monthly estimate... 1,000 Pistol and 88 Rifle a month.

Why do I or anyone need a 550B on the bench if you already have other presses? Maybe give up the Co-Ax rifle for 550B for my Mid Range FTR Shoots....

I started on my Hornady AP many years ago.. recently switched to baby Blue and the draw of the Baby Blue is strong...

Talk me down from the ledge...

The beauty of the 550 is its simplicity. Keep it set up for another caliber to avoid a conversion on another press, perhaps. I use the poop out of my 550.

You can always keep it as a spare in case your primary press goes down.

I'm like you. If the 550 was auto-indexing I'd buy one in a heartbeat! Because of that I just ordered a Lee Loadmaster to go along with my Lee turret press. Auto-indexing for half the price!

Funny, selling mine tonight to my buddy. Buying a 650. Wish I could keep it, would use for large size primers. Rarely shoot 45, but would be nice to have it set up for that. The 650 will load mostly 40.

You can also use it as a case prep center to resize and trim.

Since you currently have a 650 and a LnL AP, I don't really see the need to keep the 550. Might be a good idea to put it up for sale for someone who doesn't have a good progressive and could use one. They could just send it in for refurbishment under Dillon's "No-BS" warranty and basically have a new press.

Now, if you didn't already have all that stuff on your bench, I'd say keep the 550 and get loading with it.

              Sell it

If you got's the time send it to Dillon, then sell it. Might surprise you what you get for it. After a 650 I cant see ever going back.

OP, you don't need that old worn out 550, it could be dangerous even, send it to me, I will give it a good home..

Do something nice for someone with it. I got a second LnL and gave my Lee Loadmaster to a great guy who just couldn't afford anything.
Failing that, forget Highlander, that guy probably has more presses than Obama has lies, give it to me.

I like my 550 .with manual indexing I have good control over hick ups like primer loaded side ways and such. Easy to stop and correct.

I'm betting the OP already knew about the NO BS WARRANTY since he stated he owns a 650XL.

I collect Military Arms and enjoy shooting in local matches. I also collect older Lever Actions, especially those chambered in odd/old cartridges. If you have a nice old Winchester or Marlin in 25-20, 32-40, 38-55, 40-60, 45-70, etc etc, please PM me and we can work out a deal.
