    Decaping pin braking

    Hey guys.

    I am new to reloading.
I am just putting together my press i just got a Hornady LnL

any way i have a rscb Lube die #1 for my 223's

I was trying to set it up the other day and just deprime a few 223 Salt lake city ammo i have.

I used a round that had no primer in it to adjust to right length and what not.
Realy not sure what is going on.

also when i got the lube die the (excuse me for not knowing the lingo)
the peaice that the decaping pin sits into that screws onto the long screw
was really wide like overly wide no way it would fit in a case. I ended up going to a local shot and getting a a whole decaping ping assembly and took off the cap thing off there and put it on mine now it goes in the case nicely.

any how i have just ordered 10 new pins waiting on it. but not sure why the pins broke so easy it was hardly any force.

are these die's prone to this all i can think of since the felt on the in side don't run all the way up on the case that it moves abit in the case and doesn't nail the whole exactly as it should

any suggestion when i get the new pins
    should be here tomarrow.

I was going to call RCBS today but seems there closed on fridays.

I have a Dillon but yes, that "big" part is not designed to fit into the case - it is supposed to widen the neck slightly to make it easier to insert the bullet. You should be able to adjust the decapping pin assembly up and down. So take the decapping assembly out, insert a case and raise it all the way. Then screw in the decapping assembly until it just touches the top of the case. Lower the case and turn the decapping assembly 1/4 turn more and lock it down. You should be good to go.

I also had trouble breaking decapping pins when I was learning - in some brass (IK marked) the flash hole is too small and in others (Fiocchi) the flash holes aren't in the center. I've also had trouble with tumbling media getting stuck down in there and breaking or bending pins

That realy sounds like what i did.

I adjusted the die exactly like that and took it one step foward.
I even took a case the was decaped already put that in then adjusted the decap so its just comming out a bit.

Now i did switch that head with a standard decaping pin head from RCBS could this be the reason do i need the orginal head even though it seem so much bigger.

I would say its about the size of the case it self.. so no way it will realy make it though the neck. or is that what was intended.

I was thinking i got the wrong head with it.

Do you have one for 223 a #1 die that you can take a caliper reading for me?
so i can compair what came with mine. I ordered from a store but box was open..
      so who knows.

      thanks big time in advance.

I just measure the two of the decappers on my RCBS lube dies. One measured .208 and the other .211 both well under a .223 bullet size. I buy the small decaping pins in bags of 50. It is a bummer to run out at night or the week end.

Finnishing nails will work in a pinch too.

yha that sounds more like it
the one that came with my lube die mesure 257 at thickest point

the one i went out and bought is 222 at thickest point

so then i would assume they did give me the wrong head..
I just couldnt belive the 257 came with it. i replaced it right away glade i didn't force it.

            thank you for the comparison

hopefully i will not brake anymore tomarrow when i get some more pins.

Call up RCBS, they'll send you new pins no problem. They've got great customer service and will do anything to keep you as a customer.

Make sure your die says .223 on it. They may have sent you something else

RCBS lube dies are NOT marked for cartridge.
They are numbered 1,2,3 or 4.
You choose the right die for the case body.

The only times I have problems with the pins breaking is when the decapping stem is not centered properly.
Run the ram of the press up with a case in the die.
Loosen and re-tighten while the case is holding the decapping pin in the middle of the flash hole.
This should fix your pin breakage problem.
I don't think I have broken a pin in over 1500 cases or so now.

Make sure your whole decapping stem is not bent.
When you break a pin, you usually bend the whole stem too which just makes the problem recur more often.

RCBS will send you extras if you ask.
Get extra felt rings, decapping pins and complete decapping stems.

                        Hey guys. Update.

Well i even ended up picking up a lee deprimer.
And low and behold i even messed that pin up.

Any how after a buddy came over with some other ammo.

I belive it was the ammo and think the flash whole is smaller then it should be and not always centered.

                        the ammo is

Igman 223. 62grane bought it at ammo man.

has anyone else had this issue.
I know its crimped and have deprimed other crimped militray brass but this one gives me issues.

And i must have 1k rounds of the ammo in my garage.
