    9mm bullet question

I know this may seem like a stupid question, but I'm gonna ask it anyway. I'm not quite a reloading noob, but up to this point, I've only loaded ammo with exactly the ingredients listed in the Hornady book (8th Edition I think) - no experimenting yet. Hornady lists loads for their 9mm 115gr HPXTP. The problem is that they don't list Blue Dot as being a powder to use with that particular bullet. Alliant says Blue Dot can be used for 9mm, but their recipe lists Speer 155gr GDHP's. So my question is this: Can I use Allaiant's recipe with the Hornady 115gr HPXTP instead of the Speer? Are different mfgs. 115gr hollow points different enough to create serious issues? My gut says "no", but I'd like to hear from some guys with more experience than I have at this point.

      Hmmmm......
Reading that makes me think maybe I should think about using the Longshot that I've got and saving the Blue Dot for something else. That or go buy something else altogether.

IMO BD is too slow for 115gr bullets. Personally I'd get a faster powder or heavier bullets. Sure you can get it to work but it wouldn't be ideal IMO. Isn't LS slower than BD. I wouldn't use it either. I'd get some faster powders.

I think it would be pretty cool to use BD for 9mm for a carbine to see what kind of velocities you could get. I bet you could push a 115gr bullet over 1300fps out of a carbine with BD. I have a hi point if you want to load some up.

My older Hercules book has it listed as 115gr , 8.0 Grs @ 1190fps PSI 29,200
            other listings include Bullseye 5.0,Red Dot 4.5,Green Dot 4.7, Unique 6.1,Herco 6.3,Blue dot 8.0

Recently I have been doing a lot of reloading for my 9mm's using both Berry's and Xtreme 115gr copper plated bullets. Both Berry's and Xtreme recommend using data for lead bullets of similar weight so I started with data for the 120gr LRN bullet in my Lyman’s manual #48. I was able to develop reliable loads using Bullseye, Unique, and Power Pistol using the Lyman data for my LC9, P95, and Blackhawk Convertible. Unless you’re going for max loads I believe Blue Dot would be a poor choice for the 9mm, it has about the same bulk as Unique where 5gr of Unique just about fills the 9mm case.
