I never knew Massad Ayoob was an "old wife". I'll let you inform him.

I have tremendus respect for Ayoob

    You are obviously more knowledgeable than him so you may not need to read this;
"Buckshot is a very close range proposition. It is actually at its best as an antipersonnel load, favored by the military for jungle warfare and embassy guard duties (it proved horrendously effective in the trenches during WWI), and by police. This writer uses buckshot as a home defense shotgun load, with #1 Express (full power) buckshot in the semiautomatic 12 guage. This delivers 16 .30 caliber pellets that strike with optimum penetration for erect bipeds, and with optimum pattern saturation at distances from close range to 15 yards. These pellets will normally stay inside the assailant’s body with a front to back shot, reducing danger to innocent bystanders who might be located unseen behind a violent criminal"

I disagree with nothing he says here. maybe you should consider some of the things he dosen't say like; "6,7,8,9's do not penetrate people". Massad didn't say that and he never would because he knows better. Buckshot is a close range proposition, probably about 30 yards at best depending on the size. But it will go through your walls and kill your kids, no question. Mabe Ayoob dosen't have kids at home any more, I don't know. I would not use birdshot to guard an embasy or fight in the jungle, and I didn't recomend that. Birdshot is also a close range proposition, probably 30 FEET at best depending on size. There is value in that. As for staying in an assailants body, I don't know about you but I miss sometimes. Anyone who thinks that an ounce of birdshot in the torso at ten yards I ment to say FEET is not a stopping proposition simply does not understand physics and/or biology. Don't take my word for it, try it yourself, then get back to me.

BTW, have you ever had to clear your home, in the dark, with a .357, all the while hopeing that if you have to shoot you have correctly estimated where your sleeping children are. I have, and that's what prompted my experiments.

At least I know not to look any farther than you when I want the "real facts" Thanks!!!!

    Well, I've accomplished something then.

Sorry you can't deal with criticism, that's too bad, but that's not my fault.

I was just trolling for smartalics, looks like I got a bite
    Peace

Lots of CSI fans here I bet I assure you that a birdshot blast from 10-20 feet away especially from a full choke is not fun.

I also know people that took birdshot pellets from a somewhat longer distance and from I do believe a more open choke in a driveby, they got some pellets lodged in their backs and arms but didn't die.

BTW; I also tried the old standby, rock salt, and it's just about useless for defense.

I like silvertips in the .44splas a decent mild load for a bulldog but I feel the Federal lead semi wadcutter hollow point is more likely to expand. It's basically a big version of the respected .38spl load like that. It has to have decent stopping power for a low pressure handgun round I'd say.

I know someone that almost lost a leg and died from a close range birdshot blast.
birdshot is not an effective stopper. read my thread called"birdshot is not the answer" and see a guy with a load of birdshot in his face talking to reporters.

So I guess I'm lying then? Have you ever been shot or shot at? Have you ever seen gunshot wound up close? I agree birdshot is not ideal but would you volunteer to take a load of it in the face at typical home defense distance especially with a tighter choked gun?

your not going to get 14 inches of penetration with #9 birdshot.

Maybe not. Maybe my data is flawed. I'll bring the billygoat and you bring the birdshot. How's that.

                            FWIW,

Birdshot, because of its small size, does not have the mass and sectional density to penetrate deeply enough to reliably reach and damage critical blood distribution organs. Although birdshot can destroy a great volume of tissue at close range, the permanent crush cavity is usually less than 6 inches deep, and this is not deep enough to reliably include the heart or great blood vessels of the abdomen. A gruesome, shallow wound in the torso does not guarantee a quick stop, especially if the bad guy is chemically intoxicated or psychotic. If the tissue crushed by the pellets does not include a vital cardiovascular structure there's no reason for it to be an effective wound.

Many people load their shotguns with birdshot, usually #6 shot or smaller, to minimize interior wall penetration. Number 6 lead birdshot, when propelled at 1300 fps, has a maximum penetration depth potential of about 5 inches in standard ordnance gelatin. Not all of the pellets penetrate this deeply however; most of the shot will penetrate about 4 inches.
I'm pretty sure the folks from the FBI, IWBA, and others who happen to be Medical Doctors, who are involved in wound ballistics, have seen many actual shootings as well. They would never advocate using birdshot for HD. Though that probably won't matter to some as their anecdotal story trumps everything else. And no, I wouldn't line up to take a load of birdshot. Then again I wouldn't line up to take a shot in the face from a pellet gun or a rock to the face from a sling shot either, that doesn't mean I would us a pellet gun or sling shot for home defense.

Don't even bother trying to explain it, physics and other scientific laws/facts do not exist in some of these folks worlds.
