    Reloader 17 and the 308

With the difficulty in getting various powders out there, does anyone have any experience with using reloader 17 with the 308 cartridge? I know there are better powders, that's not what I'm asking. The better powders for 308 are hard to find right now.

I have quite a bit of RE17 but can't really find a whole lot of data on it for the 308. So I want to know can I use it since I have it and what are others experiences with it?

I have LC brass and 168gr and 175gr SMK's and would like to know if it is a good choice for those components. Look forward to reading anyone's experience with it.

High velocities, not super accurate and dirty, in my experience.

    IMR 4895 is much better.

      too slow for .308....

      look for varget, 8208, cfe223, 4064, H4895,

these are my results with varget 43.5gr, LC brass, CCI34 primer.

Reloader 17 is a bit slow for the 308 except with heavy bullets (190-210 gr.).

RE-17 might work for your 175's, but don't expect much faster than 2600 FPS.

If you want to try it with the 175's, here's a thread from Sniper's Hide with some testing. The useful data is near the end of the thread.

I'm in LA and will trade 8208 for RL17 lb for lb.

17 is a very good powder in certain things. you can use 4350 data. like I said though, some things it works great in, others, not so much. it's one of the preferred powders for 7.5x55 swiss, which I haven't tried yet but I have loaded it in 7.7x58 jap, and it works great! it's designed to work in short magnum-type cartridges and would probably work alright in .308 once you dial in the right load. give it a shot(pun) I'd say.

As others have said the burn speed is too slow unless using heavy grain bullets.

                  BL-C2, H and IMR 4895, RL 15, Varget, 748, H335...and a few others are better suited.

I was also about to suggest a heavier bullet and a long tube to get the burn complete. Look up recipes for the 4350 and good luck. there is plenty of 4064 around, so you dont have to experiment much
