    Removing rust from old dies

Got some old dies with some light rust. I got a set up to blast with alum oxide and then parkerize. Will this ruin the die? Or what other way to remove rust?

I would protect the inside of the die. Why not CLR?

take them apart and throw them in your tumbler for a little while. I've done this with old dies, rifle parts, all sorts of stuff. works great!

parkerizing is a process that use phosphoric acid to electrochemically change the steel surface. it makes the surface somewhat rougher. Not a good idea for the inside of a sizing die. that's why barrels are plugged to protect the bore from parkerizing. Sizing die internal surface should be as mirror polished as possible.

WD-40 helps inhibit rust. Use it before putting it away.

The best non-abrasive rust remover is called Evaporust. You can find them in Harbor Freight. There is a 25% off coupon that will bring the cost to around $15 for a one gallon bottle. If you look for "Evaporust" on this forum and on Google, you will see the amazing results. The stuff is easy to use. You just put the parts in a container and pour the Evaporust over the parts and leave it for a day. When you take the parts out, you just rinse it with water and wipe it down. Its non-toxic, so you don't even need to wear gloves to work with this rust remover. This rust remover will only remove the rust and will leave the rest of the metal intact.

BTW, CLR does not work as well.

A while back, I saw a post about somebody needing to remove surface rust from some reloading dies. They posted pictures and used a product called Evapo-Rust which is (to me) an unusual rust remover. Most rust removers require the use of various forms of PPE like rubber gloves, face masks or even...
