    338 Lapua Reloading

I searched before I posted this and could not find anything....

I just picked up a 338 and want to get opinions on where to start with reloading. I am looking to shoot 200-250 gr bullets. I have plenty of Winchester LR mag primers, and have some HSM ammo coming to start with to get it sighted. I am not seeing to much info in my Lyman book, so looking for some experienced 338 shooters opinions!

    Gun is a Savage 110.

    Thanks!

Why such a light projectile? I've used both 300gr matchking & berger. (110 BA as well) Both perform exceptionally well. Attached is a picture from a distance of 300 yds.

(Im not going to lie I'm a novice shooter and call such a group luck + 3 shot groups don't count) Howver it goes to show even the 110 BA has huge potential to shoot great.

As for powder I've settled on h-1000. (88 gr)

I loaded 200 grain bullets when I had the 338. Fair warning: shooting them turns your gun into a hot 338 win mag. It's nice, but you are missing out on potential.

slow 308 powders will work (H4350), but you get lots of empty case space. Again, it's nice to have the option, but wasted potential.

Good luck to you. the savage is a great gun, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Look out for a sticky bolt lift.

I may use this rifle to hunt with in the future, and I am thinking that the 220-250 grain would be flatter shooting and still retain plenty of velocity and energy to do the job.

extreme overkill for hunting, but yes a 200 grain bullet at 3200 fps with a BC near .5 is pretty flat for a long distance.
