Ok its official - I drank the reloading Kool Aid

Hey guys, just thought I would introduce myself & (since business is slow & I have time on my hands), thought I would recount my foray into reloading & the experience I've had thus far.
Little background on me - been shooting my entire life & was in USMC from 89-95. Saw some action in Desert Storm, and later in Somalia in 93. Rifle, shotgun, pistol, love it all.
I've had this FN SPR for the past 10 years:

Its been a great rifle, and after having it glass bedded by short action customs, it was a consistent .5 MOA rifle with FGMM factory rounds. I also used Hornady Steel Match .308 for plinking/steel targets, which gave .75MOA groups. Here is a typical FGMM 100 yard group:

I've pretty much been happy with this for many years, but recently decided to get into reloading, partly due to the difficulty in procuring FGMM, and also curious to see if I could improve the groups.

About a month ago I got a few books & ultimately decided to take an NRA reloading class. I made the 2 hour drive to Fullerton for BigBronco's class, and was glad I did. Relaxed & friendly atmosphere at his house, and I got all of my questions answered. There were other experienced reloaders present, and the collective knowledge was a great asset.

They help me set up my Redding Comp dies (special thanks to Exodus343) and load up some rounds. I loaded 9 rounds each in ladder steps of .5 grains of Federal Brass, IMR 4064, CCI Primers, and Hornady 178gr AMAX. Optimal seating depth on my rifle was 2.310, which meant single loading the rounds (I'm ok with that). Here's a comparison of the FGMM and one of my final rounds:

So after taking the rounds out to test, here are the three shot groups from 38.5gr...drumroll...

Needless to say, I'm totally jazzed! These are the tightest groups I've ever shot with this rifle. Still have some other things I want to try, but i'm really psyched with these results so far. I don't think I would have had the same success trying it on my own the first time out. If you are on the fence about reloading, or taking a class, I say just go for it. Its fast becoming a new passion of mine!

Those are some impressive groups! Great job! When you say optimal seating depth is 2.310", are you measuring from the ogive or OAL?

Nice shooting, and great results with your initial foray into reloading. It just gets more addictive better from here.

Thank you...that would be from the ogive, as measured with a Hornady LnL Bullet Comparator

BigBronco made a modified case with a one of his fireformed cases and used his bullets to measure to the lands with the Hornady tool.

At the class I was surprised at how far the bullets needed to be seated out to be just off the lands in your rifle but the results are fantastic!

I know you made like 5 different loads in your ladder, how did the others group and where were these in the ladder?

Actually I only left the class with about 20 rounds loaded. I went back later & got all my equipment set up & reloaded the rest.

Here are the results: (grains - Three 3 shot group average)
                  37.5 - .686
                  38.0 - .510
38.5 - .427 (that third group opened it up a bit, first two were in .3xx range)
                  39.0 - .515
                  39.5 - .531

I did a second ladder at 38.25 and 38.75, but couldn't best the 38.5 groups.

I think I'm gonna stick with the AMAXs and not even bother with the SMKs. Now the hard part is finding them in stock

Yea I don't know if you remember but seating them just off the lands meant that the rounds wouldn't chamber. We had to trial & error it back to 2.310 to make it work.

My next test is to seat them to max OAL for .308 so they fit in the magazine, to see how that affects the group size

Wow mike that does make a dif. I know you said your groups were .5 with match grade production ammo. But wow what a dif with handload ammo makes. So now it begins and the cure is to load more and get better.

Mike, I just got my gear mailed to me, post xmas present to myself, can't wait to see what I am able to do with my M1A. I'm glad to see nice positive results like that... makes me even happier knowing I did the right thing.
