.308 Reloading & Mixed Load Data

Good Afternoon Folks,

I'm researching some starting loads for my Savage Axis and have purchased the following materials.

Powder
IMR 4064
CFE 223

Projectiles
Hornady .308 150gr SP

I've gone to Hodgdon's data site to look up the recipe.

The problem is the Hornady bullets I purchased are not listed. The only 150gr .308 projectiles they list are Nosler BT and Nosler E-Tip. Is it ok to just go off of the Nosler BT projectiles that show data for IMR 4064 and CFE 223 powders?

I've noticed this before with my 9mm pistol reloads, as the Xtreme bullets weren't listed. I chose a comparable bullet and loaded at the starting point and everything worked out fine. Since I'm going with a high powered rifle round with this, I wanted to double check with some of you veterans.

A particular mfg does not matter when reloading ,your concern should be not to exceed a given load with a particular bullet.Go by bullet weight and you will be fine.

Pretty much yeah....

Except, when it comes to COAL. You dont know the length of your bullet compared to those listed- while usually pretty similar, some rounds like lapua scenars tend to be very long bullets.

With that being said, just loading to a typical 2.800 coal is probably fine.

The only other thing, is those bullets are probably pretty light for your rifle- Dont know about the axis, but most savage 308's have a 1/10 twist, which is more suited for heavies like 168, 175, 180g range

Also, you can always call or email bullet manufactures and/or powder manufacturers and ask if they have any load data for a certain bullet or powder. This is extremely important when loading non lead bullets like Barnes.

So I completed 40 rounds yesterday. I followed the load data found on the Hodgdon website as I indicated above.

The COAL was done at 2.800" and the cannelure at that measurement wasn't even near the case neck at all to be utilized. Take a look.....





Do you guys think this will be any type of issue? The depth of the bullet is still utilizing the entire neck.

everything looks good, however I would recommend that the next time you purchase bullets that you pick up something heavier - I believe that the Savage Axis is a 1:10 twist which tends to like heavier better. Also the IMR4064 that you have is a great 308 powder, I use it to push a 175 gr SMK in my 308

Thanks on your recommendations. Yes it is in fact a 1:10 twist, so I'll purchase heavier next time. I only purchased 300 projectiles for zeroing at 100 yards and getting familiarized with the rifle.

I didnt realize your bullets were cannelure....

You should be fine at 2.800, or you could press them down to the cannelure. Best guess is thats about another .050..... that will be a LONG freebore... I'd leave them at 2.8

UPDATE

Good Morning Guys,

Well I went shooting yesterday with these reloads and have noticed a ring of carbon around the case neck. It's not consistent all around the neck, as it seems to be more noticeable around 75% of the neck. Is this indicative of some sort of adjustment that is needed? Is this normal for new brass that is fire forming in the chamber? I haven't noticed this on a single piece of brass fired in .223 from any of my AR's.

Here's the batch info on these reloads.

• New Lapua .308 Brass
• Winchester 9 1/2 Primers
• Hornady Interlock SP 150gr Bullets
• Both 44gr and 45.5gr of IMR 4064
• OAL: 2.800"
