Problems with Wolf Primers

I bought some of their small rifle primers the other day because I'd heard good things about them, but I've been having bad luck with them and I was wondering if I'm the only one.

By bad luck, I mean things like failure to ignite the powder, and if that's happening then I can only assume that they aren't always igniting the charge consistently and therefore giving me wacked accuracy, which I've definitely been experiencing.

A few times I've actually heard the click from the hammer before the bang!

I pulled the bullet on my last miss-fire and as I poured the powder out I noticed a small cone shape of stuck together powder at the bottom of the case. The primer went off enough to sear a little powder but not enough to ignite it!

Did I just get a bad batch, or is this not unusual?

I haven't had any problems, but haven't fired more than a couple hundred. Are you fully seating them? Poor ignition is most often caused by a failure to seat the primer against the bottom of the pocket. What are you firing them in?

I was first using them on 30 carbine rounds and wrote off the problems to the gun, because it's old, a little loose and not that accurate anyway, but then I used some in my 450 Bushmaster rounds. I know that gun is tight so it wasn't being caused by light strikes from the firing pin.

No, just slide the tray out of the box, place my flip tray on top, flip 'em over and pick 'em up with the my primer tube picker upper thingy.

It may be the primer - I have not used Wolf but I shoot the crap out of the predissessors PMC - when PMC was distributing the Russion primers they had two varieties the regular in the red box and lead, metal or whatever free in the green box. The regulars go bang evertime and are some of the best primers I've ever used. Those green boxed things fail to go bang about 2 or 3 out of fifty. SO it could be the primer.

Then I'm stumped - I've burned through a few thousand of the red box without a single failure - my bad luck and most others that I know are with the green box. Since you got at a gun show it possible that they had been stored wrong, contaminated or who knows before you bought them.

Yeah, I'm leaning toward a bad batch, the guy was selling them pretty cheap (don't ask, I don't remember) and he had a bunch. I don't know how those things work at the shows, how some guy comes up with a crate of something he can sell cheap, but I guess it's buyer beware.

If it's important, the bargain may not be the best deal.

I thought about trying the Russian primers, but have stuck with the tried and true: CCI BR4 or Remington 7-1/2.
