    .38 spl/.357 mag die dilemma

Ok, so Ive googled, and searched here but im still not sure what die set I need to order to do both on a single stage press. Some are either or, very few load both apparently. I read also that you could just buy a .38 spl die and adjust it for .357 mag? Could someone point me in the right direction so I can get my dies by xmas? Thanks

I own a RCBS .38/.357 die to go with my single-stage press & it will do both although I just own a .38spl revolver so I have no experience loading .357 caliber. I believe it just comes with a spacer to accomadate the longer .357 mag case.

My Lee carbides do both. You adjust 'em for what you're loading. The only difference between .38 & .357 is case length.

This, but each one is adjusted to the case. Just take your time making sure. I finally went to one set of dies for the the 38 and one for the 357. Both were the same die set from Lee.

Ive actually read the opposite. People are saying the .38 spl can load .357 but not the other way around. Which is right?

^^^ Yep, and my RCBS and Lyman sets came with spacers so once you set the lock ring on the expander or seating die for .38, you can add the spacer for .357 and not have to change settings..... need to be loading the same bullet between both calibers or else the seating depth might be off.... crimp will still be good.

Same goes for .44 special/.44 magnum.

heck, my RCBS set does 357 max too. It is not labeled as a 357 max die set either:

its bigger than either 357 mag or 38 special, too.

I suspect there are very few die sets that can only do 38 special, but not 357 mag.

So should I just order a .38 spl die then or what?

                        Google is your friend.

Lee, RCBS & Dillon all list their dies as .38/.357.

DANG. Rabbit beat me by a minute. WITH a pitcher even.

Get this one. Or this one if you don't want the FCD.

DON'T GET THIS ONE. It won't do 38 special.

I would recommend the Deluxe 4 die set with the FCD. Most places sell it for less than what the FCD costs by itself. You might not need it, but having it and not needing it is better than needing it and not having it.
