    Which Brass?

    Hey all,

I'm looking to purchases some ammo that's re-loadable for general target shooting at the range. Since I plan to keep and use this brass for multiple reloads and I'm NOT using it for competition, will any brass do? In other words, does one brand of brass ammo even matter for my intended use?

I purchased some Millwall .40 S&W reloads last year and would like to purchase more to have a total of 1000rds of reloadable brass.

Would I be better off to buy new factory ammo compared to reloaded ammo if I want my brass to last longer? Does it matter?

I'm slowly getting into reloading and have bought Lyman 49th Reloading Handbook and waiting for The Beginner's Guide to Reloading Ammunition.

    Thanks

Pistol brass is pistol brass. All of mine came from the floor at the local ranges.

Any pistol brass will do. For rifle, it MIGHT affect accuracy

Instead of buying expensive ammo for brass........why not just buy brass?

This is were I have bought brass before. These folks are good to deal with.

Basically from best to worst (quality wise)
          1. Buy starline brass, ideally direct from starline for best prices if you're getting in lots of 500.
          2. Buy factory new from a reputable maker like Federal.
          3. Buy some random factory reloads from Freedom Munitions or whoever.
          -TIE-
          3. Scrounge range brass

That second #3 happens to be free and unless you're doing bullseye shooting at 50 yards you'll never notice the difference.

            Thanks Gents!

I'm waiting after March to purchase my reloading equipment for pistol & rifle. In the meantime, I was thinking I could buy factory fresh or factor reloads to build up my supply.

Recently I purchased 1000rds of Priv Partizan 7.62x39 brass ammo for my Russian SKS. Fun rifle for me, and surprised that the accuracy is rated really bad, 3" @ 100 yards is considered decent for this in an SKS.

Start picking up range brass, give it a good cleaning and go through it and pull out the damaged stuff. I have not PURCHASED a piece of brass in several years and have had no problems. Even for match grade, at that point I just sort by brand / head stamp, and then really take my time prepping the brass.

Myself and my 3 friends (we have a joint reloading setup) shoot with a club twice a month, and am one of maybe 3-4 people out of 20+ that reloads, so I usually go home with 3-4x more brass than I shoot.

Since I am a full blown brass farmer now, We must have 250k + pieces of brass stockpiled, didn't spend a dime on it.
