Sup guys!
This is my first post in this room although i have been lurking and reading for awhile. I have been looking for a used reloader for sometime now. I wanted a big blue machine 550 or 650 but that has been going as well as expected.
Long story short i got a new neighbor a few months ago. He is a gun lover also and we hit it off as you can imagine. I told him at some point i wanted to reload and he said he had just given away his brand new rock chucker kit.
Anyway about a week and a half ago he comes over with a box and gives it to me. its the rock chucker kit!!! He said he doesn't want any money for it just some 223 if i could. DEAL!
To start I made an order to midway for 165gr 40sw and my die. Found some powders at a shop and the best they had for my needs was unique. so bought 2 1lbers. I thought i had read auto comp was good so I bought one of those too but after reading more i see its for compensated guns. Owell i will just keep it for a pinch i guess.
Got my shipment from midway wed or thurs and immediately loaded some rounds referring to the speer manual for specs. I read i didn't want to go hot with a 40. Also i am just looking for a target practice load. I want it to be as soft a load possible that i can get some accuracy out of. I know with Unique that isn't very possible but its all i have to work with. I started at 4.5gr and went up to 5.6gr. shooting 10 rounds of each to compile my ladder. Even at 4.5 i still get good accuracy so i am going to keep going down.
It was so gratifying to do this. I can't wait to try the new loads out and then different powders. Also, I did the testing in the mountains at my moms place and she was intrigued. She wants me to make her some soft loads for her lady smith. I found that Trail boss is a good powder for pillow soft loads now i just need to source some! LOL If anyone knows of a local retailer that has some or another powder i can use for my 40 for light loads please let me know.
Here is the photo of the ladder I did. The 2 on the right are my control…store bought Fiocchi and PMC. The others are my loads with the grains listed. It was 10 yards away.
