best case gauge

Is there any preference on which case gauge to get? I was thinking of getting the Lyman one for .308. Are the dillons any good and worth the extra money?

I have both, I prefer the Dillon.

Wilson gages (Wilson's spelling) are good.

The best case gauge would be a custom made one using the same reamer as your barrel was chambered with.
It would be made from a cut-off piece of the same barrel blank.
This way, you basically are chamber checking in the same chamber/barrel.

I bought a lyman 308 one and just recieved it today. I tried it on some rounds I was having trouble with...works great.

The lyman reads both insufficient and excessive headspace....some brands only read one. Honestly....I could only find the lymans in stock anywhere lately.

The best gauge is not a case gauge. It is an RCBS Precision Mic to measure base to datum and base to ogive. The case gauge gives you the min/max SAMMI but the Precision Mic tells you what the actual dimension is.

Like Randall, the best you'll ever get is have your gunsmith cut you one with the same chamber reamer as they did with your barrel.

When that is not available, I'm partial to Dillon. I've got them all (Wilson, Midway's, Dillon, et. al.) and can say that I have more confidence with these than others. The only exception to this is my JP gauge. But that's for specific rifles.
