Hello I have a few old cans of powder like this and they all seem to be good that I gave away. ( I am kind of leary about using powder that I get second hand that is not sealed) But this one is still sealed. I was wondering if this would be good to use in my Savage model 12 223 target rifle? any advise is appreciated as always.

Would you use this powder?

I would use that powder. Do Not Use for your 223 reloads. That is a slow pistol powder and has no use in your 223. I would strongly suggest that you reference a reloading manual or two. Reloading is not hard but there are deadly consequences if you make a mistake. I hate 2 preach but I only wish for you and your rifle to have a long life. There are many online resource for tested load data and manuals can be found in used book stores on the cheap. If you have any questions ask here on the forum or pm me I am happy to help. -
Can you find load data for it?
I believe Hercules became Alliant. We generally use 2400 for Magnum pistol rounds but I've heard of using it for rifle. I would sniff it when I opened it. If it was dry and doesn't smell like ammonia I would load it.
Here ya go. Proceed at your own risk.
I personally would use it for my .357 Magnums and buy a more suitable powder for .223.

I was reading on the back label and it sayd its a small rifle powder but. Believe me I know shooting safety I blew a single shot shot gun in half when I got a wad stuck in the barrel so nothing goes unchecked. I don't really reload for pistols except my 45 colt but I hardly ever do that. I have not been able to find data for it in my load books which are Hornady edition 1 and 2 or speer number 9. I will not use it in my 223 so I might just sell it. I also have a sealed container of HS-7 that I will probably get rid of as well.Last edited by devster55; 12-03-2013, 10:45 PM.Good friends will come bail you out of jail. I have a 357 but it's a HD snub nose and only take it out every few months and shoot a wheel full then clean it and put it away.Good friends will come bail you out of jail. A best friend will be sitting next to you in the cell saying damn that was fun!Comment
