Does a 135grain - .40 cal break bone?

The 135 grain federal hydrashoks in the .40 s&w, are they strong enough to go through bone or do you need a heavier bullet like 155 or 165 gr?

I'm assuming that you are talking about resonable distances. A 38 grain .22lr can break bones so, of course your 135 grain bullets can.

How come no in Beretta? And why the concern for specifically breaking bone? A deeper penetration load I've heard people want but not a bone breaking one. It depends a lot on shot angle and shot placement among other factors too.

Dude, even a .22 is capable of breaking bone if the right load and shot placement is used. Though, it is certainly a lot more work for a .22 to perform. There was a thread in the off topic area a while back. that discussed a man who shot a burglar in the head with a .22. The round bounced off but knocked the burglar our for a few seconds and made him piss himself. This is pretty off topic though.

yes, .40 will break bone. Hell, I was using my USP .40 yesterday to put holes through both sides of a thick, busted, old refrigerator.

I read somewhere that an LE agency tried the 135 grain rounds in their Beretta 96's and had a lot of functional trouble with that load. I will see if I can figure out where I read that...
FWIW, the 155, 165, and 180 grain loads were OK.

I heard in a article from Massad Ayoob the Beretta 96 was somewhat less reliable in general than the 92.
