Where is a good place in San Jose to pick up a good digital caliper?

If you're looking for a caliper for general reloading, I'd suggest Harbor Freight...http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=47257...but they don't have a store close to SJ. This is the mother-of-all-cheap-Chinese-calipers, it's sold under at least 20 different brand names on the web for up to 50 bucks. If it were I, I'd order a couple on line. Buy a few spare batteries

If you'll earn your pay with the tool or want something to hand down to your grand kid, check Starret, Mitutoyo, Tesa, Browne & Sharp, etc. Bring your wallet.

No! They are one of the most expensive places to buy from and they screw you on shipping. I know that they are the place to find anything you may ever want, but try MSC they ship the same day and from Reno I normally get the package the next day.

I know they're expensive shipping, but I live close enough that I can just pick the item up from willcall.

Did you try OSH? They have a General Tool digital caliper for around $40 I think. The only thing I didn't like was the flashing display. But that could be a nearly dead battery.

                Hardly.
I buy from McMaster all the time.
Shipping is cheap compared to MSC because McMaster has a courier service that runs around the greater LA area making all the deliveries.
Order by about 10am and you get it around 4pm, the SAME DAY.
                Shipping is usually about $6-$7.

Ditto what Randall said. McMaster has the best shipping prices going. Less than $10 for same day service is pretty standard for smaller items. The first thing I ever bought from them was a solenoid controlled valve for some tinkering I was doing on boat exhaust systems. I ordered the part online from work in the morning, and it was on my back porch when I got home. I figgured I was gonna hate life when I saw the invoice with shipping charge, but it was the same std shipping fee that I had selected online. Set up an account with them if you're into machining, fabricating, or just out of the ordinary DIYing.

As far as other good tooling sources, someone mentioned Rutland Tool. We (my Dad, brother, and I) use them for cutters, bandsaw blades, and other misc tooling for various projects. If you happen to have a friend with a set of standards, don't overlook your local pawn shops. If you can verify that the device is working properly (hence the standards) sometimes you can get decent deals on premium brands like what -hanko mentioned. You just have to know what you're looking at.

As far as buying one at OSH, save yourself $20 and buy the cheapo version from Habor Freight; because odds are, the two rolled out of the same plant in China.

That is true if you are in SoCal. Up here in the SF Bay Area, McMaster Carr's shipping SUCKS! They ship it fast and you pay throuth the a**. The big attraction is you can get small quantities of just about any bizarre hardware item or fitting. I just wouldn't use them for tools up here.

The machinist tool co's that have outlets in the SF Bay Area, like Rutland are a good bet. OSH is now owned by Sears, and is no longer a good hardware store, but more of a Sears Light! Very disappointing.

I'll avoid Harbor Freight's digital caliper. I bought 2 of those and have to return them. It gave different reading for the same item I measured. Mitutoyo is good.
