    Help on Rimfire Primer Deactivation

    Hello all,
I need some help and advise for safe and permanent rimfire cartridge deactivation. I would like to make some innert rimfire cartridges (.17HMR, .22LR, .22Win Mag, and possibly .41 Short Rim) for display / decoration purpose.

I already removed the bullet and powder from the case, but don't know if WD40 is enough to count as permanent deactivation method before I put the bullet back to the case.

Is WD40 enough? Or should I also wash the case in the ultra sonic cleaner after 24hours of WD40 soaking to remove the primer component from the case?

    Thanks in advance.

pull bullet, discard powder, touch off the brass with a torch(it wont disfigure the brass), polish brass and reseat bullet. done.

      sloguy,
Thank you for your advise. Should I soak the empty case with oil or water before I apply torch, or is not necessary? And should I expect any "pop" during the torch?

      Thank you.

Not a dummy round but I made some cut away rounds for instuctional purposes by using a fired round. Take a die grinder down the side cutting where the firing pin had hit. Then using a bullet pulled from another round to place in it. They are great for display too. Also, 50BMG rounds make get cut aways too.

The heat has to be hot enough to pop off the priming compound.

its gonna pop and maybe move a little. dont do anything to it, just torch it. wear eye protection, just in case.

Thank you all for your advises. I will try it this weekend. Cut-away sounds very interesting, too.

it would be good to have some kind of indication that they are dummies maybe drill a hole in the side since you cant just leave the primer pocket empty like a centerfire

and one that has a firing pin mark might have just been a dud so thats not a dummy signal

Yes, I'm going to open a small hole from the side of the case as an indicator.

+1 on the torch for cooking off.

I used to do that just for fun sometimes. The case just lets off a "pop!" and barely moves.

Just don't throw a whole live round in your fireplace

If you torch cook off a centerfire primer make sure you point that primer in a safe direction.

just use a new, unseated, loose primer and torch that, it wont fly very far. deprime a spent case and put in the inert primer.

eye protection when you play with this stuff guys.

You can also put the rimfire brass into the gun and pull the trigger. The priming compound goes off and now it's safe.

(Of course you will have a firing ping mark on the rim- probably something you don't want with a display piece.)

Whenever I have a primed case that I need to 'make safe' I do this. It is safer than depriming the live primer.

I would justfire the empty case as well and file down the firing pin mark.

If you place rubber wads into the cases first(I use silicone hose) before firing, they make great bug control rounds.
