I have a question about loading "tuned ammo", once you find the sweet spot for your particular gun (powder type, seating crimp, bullet weight etc...) in regards to bullet weight can you substitute the same bullet weight but in a different brand or will that throw of your load?

Loading consistent ammo?

you could probably do a small work up to adjust to the new bullet.
say your sweet spot is 44 gr of Varget with 175 Sierra Match King. Then you decide to get (insert mfg name) 175 gr HPBT bullets. Do a work up of 43.8-43.9-44-44.1-44.2. Your node could be slightly different with that particular bullet. You probably just have to do one workup to find the node. Chances are, you won't be far from your old workup, given the same bullet weight and stly bullet (match vs. varmint vs. sp, etc)Comment

It may throw off your load depending on how finicky your rifle is. Remember when you change a component (including brands) you change the recipe. Case in point my rifle requires fine tuning between different brands of bullets even though same bullet weight. Consistency means just that.I have a question about loading "tuned ammo", once you find the sweet spot for your particular gun (powder type, seating crimp, bullet weight etc...) in regards to bullet weight can you substitute the same bullet weight but in a different brand or will that throw of your load?I'm only smiling at you while you talk to me because it's hilarious that you really think I give a crap about you.
As I've gotten older I thought I was gaining patience, then I realized I simply don't give a crap.Comment

Hell, the same load with the same bullets will produce different results over the life of the barrel. So, yes, any change can and will affect the precision of the loads.
Even two bullets with the same weight and profile could have different CGs which will affect how they fly too. That's one reason that copper bullets use different loads than lead filled bullets of the same weight. Of course, case capacity differences between short bullets and longer bullets of the same weight is an issue too.Last edited by CSACANNONEER; 11-16-2013, 5:24 PM.NRA Certified Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun and Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor
