Powder Storage?

Good Day everyone.

I am in the mist of determining how to set things up for reloading.

Ok some info

I'm a total new reloaded in the san fanado valley.
I am looking to reload in my office.
I have a closet in my office where i was planing on keeping all my stuff
ie when press not in use it will go in there. along with brass and what not.

My safe is in my garage its a nice size safe.

Any how my question is concerning Powder and primer storage.
in an ideal world i would like to keep it in my closet with a lock on the door.

My brother in-law is telling me i should keep it in my safe in the garage for safety
I kinda agree but with the amount of time i have to reload with 2 little kids its very limited i do not want to go out to the garage and open the safe to get to it. I would rather just reload in the garage but my garage is not finished no sheet rock no insulation so gets way to hot and dirty in there right now..

Any way was looking for some other peoples comments on this and thoughts or alternatives.

Dont put it in the safe. Believe it or not the powder isnt very dangerous at all. If it did catch fire it wont blow up unless it is contained in a confined metal container where pressure can build up. Just put it in the closet. You dont even need to lock it unless you are concerned someone might steal it. Unless you have over 25 pounds then you dont need to worry about special storage and even then they only require it to be in a wood box.

thanks for the info just looking for other people optionions other than my brother inlaw.

I would lock it up because i have a 2year old and a 3year old
But the plan to trim the bottom of the door a bit more. ie have 2-3 inches on the bottom for ventilation.. (also wooden floors in office)

Now i know people say that keeping powder in metal box's is like making a grenade

Would it be a good idea to keep the primers in there original packing and in lets say a 30mm can? in my closet? ie would this stop the spark if a primer does strike from getting to anything else?

Most of the time they go off when you're repriming a case. Primers are hotter and more sensitive than powders. I suppose you could keep them in ammo cans, since I believe they are designed to blow the lid off instead of fragmenting, I just never saw a reason to do so. I keep mine in their original containers on a shelf.

I like to keep powder in a picnic cooler. The insulation provides some protection in event of fire, but the cooler will not contain the pressure to create a bomb.
The only problem is that I want to go to the shoot and Q at Chabot on Saturday... and I just realized all my coolers are are powder magazines.

I have a shelf under my reloading bench, all of the powder is on that shelf.

I store all my powder in a mini fridge. My reloading room is in a barn so it gets very hot in the summer. If powder reaches a certain temperature it actually changes the chemical properties of the powder and can affect the burn rate. You can store powder in an ammo can too if you would like but its not as safe as some other options. The little picnic coolers like someone else said is a great idea. Also, primers are very stable. They simply will not go off on their own. I have a progressive press and every once in a while the primer will drop sideways and get completely crushed but they have never gone off. Just remember to never prime a loaded case and you should be fine.

I always keep the Primers a safe distance from the powder. This prevents Murphy's Law from being a player
