You need a load book or a powder manufacturers web site like hogdon. They have all the data. What powder do you have, and how powerful do you want the load? Do you want bunny fart loads that feel softer than a 223 or hot loads that kick harder than a 30-06 bolt gun?

I run a cast lead round nose plain base boolit (159 grains) over 6.0 grains of red dot pistol powder and get 1116 fps, which is extremely light, but accurate enough to hit a 12" steel plate at 100 yards. 4895 rifle powder will push the bullet much faster. You can run a nice medium level load, or full power loads with 4895. Plated bullets (which is what most extreme bullets seem to be) can not always be pushed as hard as a jacketed or cast boolit.

Trail boss powder is a great powder for any non-semi auto gun, when you want soft loads. You don't need load data for specific calibers to use it, but there is data out there.

Are you plinking, shooting little groups on paper, or hunting?

I have had good luck with Hod 4895, 27 grain.

      1700 fps

Any faster and I lost accuracy. This is a plinking round for 100 yrds but I can get some accuracy @ 200 yrds, pretty good drop though, you can hit body mass np.

OP using a flat nose bullet? I hope.
Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...

Fora real plinker I use 8-8.5 of Trail Boss.. with the extreme 150 gr 308 flat points.. It fills the case about 65% and is very easy to shoot (low recoil).

I dont have my record infrontbofnme but I made some loads with leveroution powder in .5gr increments when we got closer to max we had a few bullets lose accuracy and most likely wete coming apart. We used the data from hodgdons site.
I was told that the xtreme 30-30s are good up to 2500fps. And close to max we were probably at closer to 2700 fps hence why the loss of accuracy and the probable bullet deformation

I would never shoot one that fast. I got the copper coming off at 2100 with terrible accuracy, if you could even call it that, bullets went everywhere.

You call X-treme and they will tell you 1500 fps max.

Thanks everyone for the information. I have tried 8grain red dot with no success and thus decided to ask for other load information.
8grain red dot was not accurate at 50yard. I started from 7 and worked up to 9 without success.
Beside red dot, trial boss, H4895. Does anyone else use any other powder?

Is the bullet seating depth the same as other makers bullets in it's weight? The reason I ask, is that I bought some Oregon Trail bullets for my 30-30 and 32 Spl. levers, and their shape was different from the book norms, requiring me to get the proper seating dimensions from them. Once seated that way, they shot very accurately with Varget.

A5744 might have data. It is a rifle powder that can be easily reduced, but will reach almost full velocity too. I use it for mid powered 460 mag loads, which is more like a rifle cartridge than a pistol cartridge anyway. It does leave some unburned granules at low charges, but it works fine.

Darn......I just looked up Accurate powder and all of them start at 1700 fps with no reduced loads listed. Other cartridges have some reduced loads.

Looks like you might be able to go as low as 18.0 grains of H4895. You can download it for what they call youth loads. I have done it with IMR 4895 in 30-06 with no problems, but others say the powders are not the same. Just find a max load for the same bullet with h4895 and multiply by 0.60 to get a starting load.

                    Info is here: http://www.hodgdon.com/PDF/H4895%20R...le%20Loads.pdf

I have tried looking for load data for xtreme 150grain 308 without success. Since there is no data, i was told to use cast bullet with the same weight and diameter 308.

I was looking at the youth load, but it was for different bullets. I think those are jacketed bullets. Can i still use that as a starting point and work up my load for the xtreme plated bullet.

I jsut checked off hodgdons site. I was off.
we loaded some to 38gr or leveroution and those were 50/50 on the bullets coming apart, but the 35gr ones all shot fine.
they list the 35gr at 2300fps but out of my marlin 336 they were probably closer to 2100-2200, the 37gr ones were probably pushing the limit for the plated bullets hence the horrible accuracy.
my next loads Im going to bring my crono and make some from 30-35gr of leveroution

I had horrible luck with LVR powder and hence sold it. There was a small window using this powder. From what I remember, at 30grains with the xtreme plated bullets, the bullet was all over the place. I would use around 25grain and work your way up. I really believe if you have TIME you can get a really accurate load for 100-150yd with that powder. Only thing is that you have to spend a lot of time figuring what works. For me, I wont even crimp the bullet (dont use with tubular mag). Have fun working up a load.

My OAL was 2.550 for the flat nose bullet according to Hodgdon website. I stick with OAL because I tried to trim all my cases to 2.039, but sometimes I have to trim them shorter and thus have to seat the bullet deeper than norm.

I would use the youth load as a starting point, but I would keep a close eye on any squibs, bullets stuck in the barrel, or other issues. The 4895 youth load gave me a much more powerful load than red dot, when used in my 30-06. I don't think you will have a problem, other than just having to figure out what the rifle likes to get accuracy. I ran the youth load with 150 jacketed bullets in the 30-06. I also ran jacketed bullets over the trail boss and red dot. I am using Herco right now for 30-06 and lead bullets which is kind of like running red dot.

I used thousands of plated bullets in my competition pistol in the past. I used lead data or low to med jacketed data. The youth load I sugested was low to medium velocity of a jacketed load data. 4895 seems to be a pretty forgiving powder and hogdon says it is the slowest rifle powder which responds well to downloading.

                              Here is lead data:
                              160 GR. CAST LFN Hodgdon H4895 .308" 2.485" 17.5 1351 15,200 CUP 21.0 1562 23,100 CUP

Here is jacketed data for h4895
                              160 GR. HDY FTX Hodgdon H4895 .308" 2.550" 27.8 2045 31,100 CUP 30.0 2200 35,500 CUP
Your plated bullet is 150 grain, but the 150 listed on hogdons web site appears to be a sintered metal, or frangible bullet, if I read it correctly. I have used those in 9mm, and they take a lot of powder to get them to cycle like a traditional bullet. They are big for their weight. I would ignore that data.

The max load for the 160 jacketed is 30.0 grains multiplied by the 60% youth load, gives you 18.0 grains. It says not to reduce more than an additional 10% which is 1.8 grains. So, don't go below 16.2 grains. The minimum listed jacketed load is 27.8. The max lead load it 21.0. Now that lead load could be a plain base bullet which would be iffy at high speeds, so I see why the max is 1500 fps.

Based on all that, if I was doing this, I would start at 18.0 and maybe work up to 21 grains at first.

Later you might want to push it a little higher if necessary. Also, lighter bullets usually take more powder than heavier bullets. Based on 160 bullets instead of 150, you are using lower amounts of powder, this seems perfectly safe to me, as long as you don't stick a bullet in the barrel. My understanding is that lead is easier to push down the barrel than copper plated or jacketed bullets. The lead is easier to deform and seal to the bore and it has less friction on the barrel. I suspect the copper will take more powder than a lead bullet but less than a jacketed to get it out of the barrel.

I would run 18-21 grains, but you should only do it IF this all make sense to you and you agree to try it at your own risk. Maybe others can comment on this data. If I had some copper plated 30 cal bullets, I would try it in my win 94 30-30 and let you know.

The youth load with a 150 jacketed bullet in 30-06 was not problem for function and hitting a steel plate at 100 yards. Worst thing I could see with plated is that it may begin to separate. I think I recall the load coming out at 1700 fps, and my red dot load was 1400 fps, while trail boss was 1200 fps. Now this was all in the bigger 30-06 case, with more powder than you will run, so you might see lower speeds.

I don't recall if you mentioned that you are using a chronograph. I use a CED M2 and love it.
