XL 650 Frustration

After many years, I decided to do a tear-down,complete cleaning, and small parts replacement. All was going fine until I got to the point where I had to replace the indexing spring - it's the one that is anchored between the cam and plate.. If there was ever a three handed job this is it.

Just had to vent a bit here.

Use a pair of hemostats to grab one end of the spring.

It's easier to spend the $80 and ship it back to Dillon for a full rebuild..

I had the same problem when I first did mine. It shouldn't be that bad if you have the ram down (I think).

Yes, the ram has to be down, otherwise the spring can't stay on the pin on the indexing cam.

The way I finally did it was to remove the primer seating plunger which relieved the spring pressure on that side. That was not allowing the plate to sit level and you couldn't get the 2 screws started. Still not a fun job.

Other than that, for all it does, it's really not that bad to break down and reassemble. I think the only obvious change I would make would be to make that indexing cam out of metal instead of plastic, unless there is a reason they made it that way.

just go slow and have a extra spring if you launch that one you may never find it, also do not put any un due pressure on the plastic lug that one end goes on (the forgot the name shellplate turner thing) oh yeah indexer ring

Maybe it's lame to some, but I would just send it in.
It would be fun to get it back. Kinda like that first time it was delivered. Only this time I know what I'm doing.

The ram up. Seat spring on front pin. Feed behind primer seating punch with hand. Needle nose pliers to grab and pull spring. Seat onto rear pin with finger.
