50 dtc sizing and fire forming?

Hey guys I'm looking into reloading 50 dtc and would like to go the route of starting with a 50bmg case and forming it into the 50dtc. I feel I have read too many forums about forming this cartridge and have read many conflicting processes to the point to where I am confused now. From what I gather it sounds like I trim the 50bmg down, run the case through an fl dtc die, load and fire ? I don't want to blow something up so thats why I ask. I have experience reloading everyday calibers from 223 up to 300 win mag but never played with forming and such so your help would be much appreciated

    thanks john

Run it in the die see what happens, if you don't have to set the shoulder forward you should be alright. If you have to then you go oversize on the neck to use it as your shoulder to keep your head space correct I don't have the slightest idea what would be a light load for fire forming.

      1. trim the BMG case to 3.78"
      2. full length size/decap in DTC-EDM die (from CH4D.com)
      3. remove the primer pocket crimp/stakes if necessary
      4. reprime with CCI #35 or Tula .50bmg primer
      5. charge with 218gr of H50bmg or equivalent
      6. seat any BMG 647gr-690gr bullet to the cannelure
      7. shoot to fire-form

the more pressure, the better it will fireform. The crisper the shoulder will be. I'm told 35ksi roughly for a basic fireform, all the way up to full power.

That's an awesome picture Mr Kubota. Most DTC pics do not clearly show that the DTC case is improved. it just looks like 50BMG-neutered. That pic clearly shows the truth.

            Thank you for posting that.

Where are you located? Mr.Kubota is in SoCal, if you have the time and he does also.... He's been known to give a hands on instruction to people if you ask nice. :-)

He's one of the best when it comes to reloading 50 DTC. Try a PM and see how that goes

Are you a FCSA member? We have a 1000 yard 50 cal match in CALIFORNIA every year along with a couple 200 fun matches in the bay area. Mr. K has been loading DTC commercially about as long as anyone in the states but, if you are ever in the Thousand Oaks area and need some help, I'm here for you. I have DTC dies for the sole purpose of helping others. I don't own a DTC yet (BMGs) but, that didn't stop me from buying dies just to help others. BTW, what kind of 50 do you have? What press and dies will you be using?

50BMGBOB is the match director for the 200 yd fun shoots at USI. He also happens to be the match director for the 1000 yd FCSA sanctioned match in Coalinga. Since you're in the Bay Area, you should also try to make the matches in Reno. Don't worry about not knowing what you're doing. Just contact the match director and ask for guidance. I drove over 8 hours to my first 50 match and had only fired 6 rounds of 50 prior to showing up at the match. Hell, I'd never even shot 1000 yards before. Since then, I've learned a lot from attending matches and from the FCSA members only forum.

The next fun match is in a few weeks, Oct 26, at USI in Concord. We usually have a good turnout with 50BMG's and 510DTC. Come by and you will get to see a few different rifles and can talk about reloading for the 510DTC. Shoot me a PM if you want more info.
