Best 9mm Ammo for the Range and HD

Just got a glock 19 and I'm looking for some good/decently priced ammo for the range as well as can be used for HD. I would also like to know where some of you guys get your ammo as it is hard to find right now.

I was reading somewhere that the Federal 9BPLE is a favorite amongst a lot of people, however, can this round be used at a range?

I am not sure why you would like to combine two opposites. For range and plinking, I find what’s the cheapest out there, usually a 115gr FMJ factory ammo. For HD purpose, I like 124gr Hollow point, regular pressure. (Speer Gold Dot) Just use the cheapest factory ammo for range use and save the premium expanding hollow points for HD. Run a box or two of HD ammo to test on your G19. Running HD ammo also for range use can get quite expensive.

Good points, in terms of factory FMJ which would you recommend?

Always happy with my range ammo from them (and luckily have never had to use it for HD.)

Freedom also sells hollowpoints, but I have never tried them. I practice with round nose reloads, but buy factory HP for SD.

+1 on Freedom. I've run a couple thousand through both my Glock 17 and Sig and it ran great.

I have, those were the very first ammo I fed into my brand new Beretta PX4 Storm 9mm. 124gr HP 9mm. Pretty good stuff, everything fired and ejected properly.

Another vote for Freedom Munitions from me too.

Looks like I'll be getting a few cases of freedom munitions for my range time ammo. Thanks all!

Now for HD, what do you guys prefer?

Whatever is the cheapest, that I would get. Before I started reloading, I always check the deals and the ads here at Calguns. Actually, that’s how I got my ammo before; deals from Cabela’s, Freedom Munitions, Midway, etc. Some local gun shop’s ammo price, though not the lowest, are reasonable.
If I were looking for factory ammo, I would:

-Check the Deals, Sales section everyday
-Check the Milpitas Walmart has Ammo thread; sometimes they post links to web sales
-Like local gun shops in FB, sometimes they post that they recently just got ammo.

As far as which factory brands I like, PMC and S&B (Herter’s) are the two I like.

You don't need to shoot expensive self defense ammo at the range beyond what it takes to prove to yourself that it feeds in your weapon. As for what round to pick for self defense I go with DocGKR's list of ammo that's been proven effective for LE agencies. Ideally your practice ammo should mimic the ballistics of your SD ammo but realistically 9mm is hard to come by right now so practice with what you can find and afford.

Can't have both in one unfortunately, unless you are willing to waste money on putting hollow points through paper. I'll give another +1 for Freedom Munitions 115gr blaster ammo and a suggestion of either Speer Gold Dot or Federal HST for home defense.

^^ Thanks for the list. I've been looking for 124gr HP options for HD/SD.
