Those of you with large stores of ammo...

How are you storing this stuff?

Right now, I've got them in a whole bunch of ammo cans. But, I keep the ammo in the original boxes. This takes up a ton of space. Especially since some of the ammo is packaged less than efficiently (i.e. plastic trays inside the box with lots of space between rounds).

Do you empty out the ammo into ammo boxes. Repackage into zip loc bags?

    Any other suggestions?

I've got too many calibers, and not enough space, so would love to get some ideas about how to efficiently store this stuff.

    Thanks!

I have at least one MTM ammo can for each caliber. All have a padlock, as does the ammo can full of primers with the rest in the locked rifle cabinet.

Considering the value, I am starting to get supplied with cans and locks for brass, bullets, and dies. It's all in a concrete walled room with a locked door.

For loaded ammo I have 50 round plastic boxes for revolver and 100 round boxes for semi-auto, all color coded.

Some of the bulk loaded ammo I bought is still in steel military ammo boxes, which I will phase out in favor of boxes with padlocks.

There are dessicant bags or tins in each sealed box.

Nothing is at floor level without being in a waterproof container. There are high pressure hoses and water pipes in that room.

I store most of my ammo in the original boxes if that's how I bought it and fit what I can in the ammo cans I have. I do have a case of 1000 9mm (20 boxes of ammo in one large box) that I have on the floor in an upstairs bedroom. I do shoot more the average person so it gets rotated out over time.

Job site box. 4x2x2. Doubles as a table when closed. Bolts to ground. Has pop outs for running power inside. Home Depot.

All of my .22LR, and any of the factory stuff, (which there is very little), I keep in the original box and store on a shelf.

Since I reload, I usually have a few hundred rounds of a few calibers on hand when I need it. I pretty much reload whenever I know I will be going out to the range. And at that time, I pretty much reload only the amount I know I will be shooting on that day.

As to components ... Component storage is pretty darned efficient. It is very easy to store several thousand rounds of components in a very small amount of space. Powder, and primers do not take up much space. The brass is reusable so a little goes a very long way.

In a steel four drawer filing cabinet in a closet. IE, so not a lot of humidity to be concerned about.

I reload, so just throw it in ammo cans with dessicant packets. Same with .22 boxes, despite the waste of space arround them.

I have several 20mm ammo cans that each hold the same caliber, I don't know the weight but probably around 80lbs each maybe more. I no longer try and move them when they are full. I also have some gun lock cables attaching the cans together making them near impossible to move if a perp doesn't happen to have some cutters with him. You can still open the lids but it keeps someone from just "running" off with a full can of ammo. My friends and family all looked at me like I was a gun nut when they helped me move recently. I have a lot. I was also looking into the Rigid job site boxes but those take up quite a bit of room.

Original boxes, in ammo cans, with dessicant, locked, stored in a safe.

Like this...kind of a mess. The cooler has smokeless gunpowder in it.

I like clean 1 gallon paint cans - they hold a lot, have a carry handle, stack well, and seal tightly. I bought a bag of silica cat litter and include 1/4 cup of it twist tied into a coffee filter before sealing the cans. Throw a paint smear on it and label "color" with a sharpie on the lid and hide in plain sight.
