H4831 Powder

Is anybody interested in military surplus H4831 Powder?
I met an elderly gentleman yesterday that was getting out of reloading (arthritis & bad eyes) and asked if I wanted to buy his reloading equipment.
He says he has between 50~60# of this powder and I don't know anything about it except he bought it as military surplus and it appears to be the precursor to Hogdons 4831.

I have no idea yet what he wants for everything, but I'm looking for information before I go visit him.
(I like to use Varget and Universal, so I've no experience with 4831.)

There was a surplus H4831 packed by Hodgon a long time ago. The current H4831 is good for large capacity cases like the WSM cartridges, 7 Rem mag, 300 Win Mag, etc.

How long is a long time ago and would the powder still be good?

If it was stored correctly age will not matter. A sign of deterioration is if the powder has a red dust in it or an amonia smell.

I remember seeing it listed for less than $1.50/lb so it had to be in the early 70's or so. If it doesn't stink (like said above, acrid or ammonia-like) and looks grey to grey-black and not clumped together, it is usually fine.

No not smokeless powder. you have to build a cabinet but it is not a felony

There are city/county fire regulations requiring more than 20lbs to be stored in a proper powder magazine (basically a big wood box), but certainly nothing in the penal code...

I'm going to meet him tomorrow to look at his stuff.
I don't reload / own the calibers that Randall said the stuff was suitable for. The biggest caliber I shoot is .308 so I don't have a use for it, but I'll get the information and pass it along for those that are interested.
I'm about 2 hours east of Oakland, my in-laws live in Oakland Hills so I might be that way now and then.
